    Google Earth Curupted Firefox

    Hi all,

I have a bit of a problem, I installed googleearth, now my Firefox3 is broken.
    I get the following when using any search engine;

    Content Encoding Error
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

    * Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

If I go to the error console of firefox I get the following error:

Failed to load XPCOM component: /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9/components/libpyloader.so
Failed to load XPCOM component: /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9/components/pyabout.py

Googleearth also doesnt so the earth but only stars!
Can some one point me in the right direction?

Right, if I get a nice error message like that, I always google it first. In your case there are a number of bugs against

That's an odd problem description, although I'm sure that is the sequence of events that you observed. I have never heard of any relationship between the GoogleEarth package and a browser.

How did you install GoogleEarth -- from the Medibuntu repo using Adept Manager, I hope?

I would say remove/purge Firefox and install it again, as the first experiment to see what will be needed to fix this.

I also have observed GoogleEarth to show only the stars, at first. Usually that is after a new installation. I'm not sure exactly what I've done to get it to start correctly, but it always does.

EDIT : Ooops, sorry toad -- I didn't mean to post on top of yours!

I have downloaded the bin file from Google and then installed it.
How can I uninstall the googleearth?
I already tried the uninstall, with no luck.

The funny thing is I can browse a site that I have in my bookmarks, but when I try to search something it gives me that error, even in konqueror it gives me a bunch of hogwash!

Toad: I can not google, this is my only help line at this stage.

I've always had better luck setting up the Medibuntu repo and getting GoogleEarth that way:

          http://www.medibuntu.org/

Go to the "Repository How To" tab and follow the instructions to add the repository to your sources. Then, after you "Fetch" in Adept Manager, you will be able to find GoogleEarth on your list of available packages.

Hm, depends where it installed itself. Probably under /opt, but you may just want to do a
              Code:
              sudo updatedb
              followed by a
              Code:
              locate oogle
(I don't know whether the initial letter is capitalised, hence I left it out) and see what it spits out. Perhaps you need to refine your search using grep, but that way you can find out where it planted itself.

As for uninstalling - Linux ain't windows, there is no registry or any such diarrhoea, so just deleting the folder will do the trick

                Re: Google Earth Curupted Firefox

OK, I found the fix for the GoogleEarth problem. After I updated to GE 4.3, I too could only see stars (and not yet drunk, so I knew this wasn't right ....).

Sooooooooooo ... there's a problem in which GE needs to write to a cache that is root-only privileges, and it can't, so no planet Earth. Mr. Google found me the fix, to be done in the user's own directory:

                dibl@cville:~$ cd .config/Google
                dibl@cville:~/.config/Google$ sudo chown dibl GoogleEarthPlus.conf
Upon executing this change of permissions, running GoogleEarth produces an error message, that the cache at /root can't be used, and it will instead create a cache in the user's folder. Tell it "OK" to proceed. Then GoogleEarth will run correctly.

Note: please use YOUR user name, and not mine, in the "chown" command!

                Thanks to skawaii at groups.google.com.

Thanx dibl, after I have done that, Google earth worked as well as my firefox.

How's that for two problems fixed with one move!

Nice on dibl! It had been bugging me, but I couldn't be arsed/have too much on my plate at the mo to toy around with GE - a big thanks across the pond

                        Re: Google Earth Curupted Firefox

Okay.. I have the GE installed and running, from the repositories.. But I absolutely cannot read the text in the menu bar of GE, nor the text in any of the 'popup' windows on the map. It simply appears to be too small.
Any suggestions?. Is there a setting in GE to change fonts/font size?

I'm also having to launch both GE and forefox from the terminal. I'm guessing the above directions will solve that issue, too?

                        thanks in advance..

.ooops I found the answer after posting this. Sorry
