    KDE4 installation on KDE3.5.9 - problems

I have just migrated to linux from windows vista and installed Kubuntu 8.04. I learnt about KDE 4 and wanted to install it. I used adept installer..clicked on others and installed KDE 4 without uninstalling KDE 3.5.9 thinking that if I install KDE 4 it will automatically upgrade previous version of KDE. After installation and reboot I notice that while the logon screen is that of KDE 4, the desktop still remains like my old KDE3 type. I click on the K menu and browse through the programs I observe that there are KDE 4 and KDE 3 versions of the same program, such as Konqueror and Konqueror (KDE 4).
I understand that I have screwed my KDE system all up due to my ignorance of the workings of linux system.
I would like to keep KDE 4 and change my desktop to KDE 4 as I can still see the KDE 3 panel, and I want to remove KDE3 from the system. Please help me out and suggest what steps I need to follow.

Okay, log out again and examine the login screen more closely - there is a place (somewhere) where you can determine the "session type". Once you've found it, select kde4 and login

Good question. I don't think anybody has ever done that! You see, KDE4 is not ready yet and for production purposes and general usability most people prefer to revert to the tried and tested KDE3.x...

Having said that, there is a remastered kde4 kubuntu CD out there. Download that, do a reinstall (Perhaps back up keep your ~.kde4 directory and any other private data) and then you should/might have a clean kde4 install.

For those in the know/who've tried it - I assume the kde4 CD is built on top of a minimal install CD and has no kde3 stuff on it? Fishing here, but that is how I would have done it...

          Re: KDE4 installation on KDE3.5.9 - problems

I've used kde4 exclusively for several months now. It's "general usability" is not bad at all, in my opinion. I also installed kde4 over 3.5.9, and then as time went on I have uninstalled duplicate programs. For example, if I had the kde3 version of gwenview as well as the kde4 version, I would uninstall the kde3 version (after making sure the kde4 version did what I needed). That way you end up with a fairly streamlined system.

However, at this point you're almost certainly going to end up needing many kde 3.5.9 components. For example, Adept Manager has not been ported to kde4, so if you plan on using it, you can just keep it around.

            Kubuntu 8.04 Versions
Kubuntu 8.04 will consist of two different releases, the commercially supported one featuring the stable KDE 3.5.9 desktop and a remix featuring the latest release of KDE 4.0. The following is a quick breakdown of the type of support and distributions methods which will be made available to Kubuntu 8.04:

            Kubuntu
            • Rock solid KDE 3
            • Commercial support provided by Canonical for a term of 18 months
            • Release available through ShipIt for everybody as well as downloading

            Kubuntu KDE 4 Remix
            • Cutting edge KDE 4.0
            • Support provided by the Kubuntu community via Ubuntu Forums, Kubuntu Forums, IRC, and the Kubuntu Users Mailing List.
            • Release available through CDs for groups who need it (ie. LoCo teams, conference teams, etc.) as well as downloading

            Pure KDE 4 system

There is a blueprint/plan (for Kubuntu 8.10)> Kubuntu Intrepid Version
            Summary

Change to KDE 4 by default in Kubuntu Intrepid and use KDE 4 applications where they are sufficiently stable...
