    WINE problems

    Hello, world!

Haven't posted here in a long time (haven't had any problems I couldn't solve), but I find the need to post here yet again.

I recently updated to Kubuntu 8.04, and now Wine does not work. Whenever I try to run a Wine program, nothing happens.

I tried using ksysguard to see if Wine even starts, and it does for about two seconds, then quits.

If I try to run winecfg through a terminal, here is what the error output is:

I never had this problem until I updated to 8.04 over the Internet. I've installed all updates since then. I have programs installed that I don't want to reinstall again, so I don't want to erase ~/.wine/ or anything like that.

    Re: WINE problems

I would recommend that you back up your .wine folder and purge the wine package and go with a fresh install. You can wait till KUbuntu finally decides to let us have Wine 1.0 in the repos.

But as dangerous as wine is, do you really need it

      Re: WINE problems

I've never heard of it as dangerous, and its never caused problems in the past.

And, there ARE a few programs that I like to run on it (Portal and other games work faster under Wine than in Windows, for some reason).

          Re: WINE problems

Do you mean a fresh install of Ubuntu, or a fresh install of Wine?

I've already reinstalled Wine. And I don't want to do a fresh Ubuntu install, because I have no way to reliably back up my data (honestly, don't argue with this. Just accept this fact and don't try to help me with backing up data).
