this is text file that contains logs of your "graphical interface". Text files can be viewed with text editors. Try to reinstall drivers like dibl says first. Maybe we don't need your xorg log file at all.

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

Ok. I did the steps dibl suggested.
When I checked Hardware Drivers Manager on Kmenu it says:
"No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."
Also, NVIDIA X Server Settings does not work. At one point it was.
I think I should uninstall envy and everything to do with it and the same with nvidia and start again.
      What do you think?

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

When you use Envyng to install the driver, you cannot rely on the *buntu Restricted Drivers Manager -- it says I have no Nvidia driver too, but if you look in the Image Gallery you will observe that I certainly do, running Compiz.

So, the real question is, did the envyng script appear to finish without errors? When you logged back in, did you observe the Nvidia green and black splash screen?

Do you have in the KMenu > System menu an Nvidia Settings Manager?

When you say Nvidia Settings Manager "does not work", what does that mean - it won't open, the settings don't stay set, or what?

          Hey dibl,
I have NVIDIA X Server Settings working now.
I'm not sure what that does for me though.

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

OK, let's say you wanted a different default screen resolution. You would do Alt-F2 and enter "kdesu nvidia-settings" with no quote marks, and then you can change the resolution to what you want for default. Then you click the "Save to X configuration" button, and it will overwrite those settings into xorg.conf.

If you only want to change the screen resolution for your current login session, then you don't use "kdesu" and you don't try to "Save to X Configuration File".

            OK?

              Hey dibl,
              I got this message:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

I either getting close or I'm messed and have to start over.

OK. Open the Konsole and enter
                Code:
                sudo nvidia-xconfig
give your password and let it overwrite the xorg.conf file.

Then close the Konsole and restart the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and log back in.

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

Okay, so I tried this envy lark yesterday and when I switched the computer on this morning it would get stuck in a loop on tty2 before calling up kdm.

Great. I changed to tty3, stopped kdm, started envyng -t, let it do its magic and after a reboot I am back in business. Not bad but I still prefer to do these things by hand (old fashioned, I know).

                      What's tty2 and tty3?
I have just uninstalled everything to do with envy, envyng, and nvidia and want to start over.

I think I have been posting too much on this problem so as I said I've uninstall all this stuff and I'm going to start fresh by "handling the hell out of it" and digging in and studying all I can to get to the bottom of my problem.
                        Any help would be appreciated.

if you start fresh, whether by clearing out the things you have installed, or by doing a clean install, the single step you need to follow can be found HERE. Then, if there are still issues, there are other things to look at, most of which can be found through links on that Ubuntu wiki page, but I can point you to the fix. Start easy, then try the more complicated steps only if necessary.

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

tty1-6 are shell logins, while tty7-16 (?) are reserved for graphical logins. So when you log in normally, you log in to tty7 (the first graphical login). You can change to a shell login by pressing CTRL+ALT+6 (or any other number between 1 and 6 for that matter). If you need to get back to KDE, a simple CTRL+ALT+F7 will bring you back.

As for manual nvidia driver installation, have a look at post #6 of this thread http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3095660.0

But first go for claydoh's approach and see if it works for you

                              Hey claydoh,
The link you gave doesn't include Kubuntu Hardy 8.04. Is there another link?
I understand about being busy for sure. The only reason I'm on so much is I'm of work with a bad case of gout in my ankle.
If I do a fresh install, do you think I should go with KDE4 or is it still to problematic?

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

the link I gave takes you directly to the section of the page with the directions for Hardy:
                                Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

Go to KMenu->System->Hardware Drivers Manager and check the box to enable the restricted drivers for your nVidia card if the option is provided.
Thats it, honest Checking the box installs the drivers package and its dependencies, sets up your xorg.conf file to use it, and I believe it also prompts you to reboot.

There are more info and links available on the page as well. if you have a problem, you should still be able to get you your desktop and we can proceed from there if we need to.

I would suggest staying with 3.5.9 for now, but you can easily and safely check out KDE4
                                http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.1beta2.php
You can easily add the needed repository using Adept. KDE4 sits alongside KDE3 so you can log in to one or the other without anything conflicting.
