Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

I get confused when I go to Adept/Synaptic. There are a lot of choices and I don't know which ones I need and which ones are going to cause a problem.

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

Here's an example of what Adept says I have installed when I do a search using "nvidia":
      envyng-core
      envyng-qt
      nvidia-glx
      nvidia-new-kernel-source
      nvidia-settings

      What else do I need?

Re: Google Earth NVIDIA FX 5200...

Should have said this in the last post.
When I do a search for "nvidia" in Synaptic I get:
        envyng-core
        envyng-qt
        jockey-common
        jockey-kde
        nvidia-glx
        nvidia-new-kernel-source-envy
        nvidia-settings
        smart-dimmer
        xserver-xorg-video-nv

What the hell all this stuff is...I don't know.

Install envy-qt first, then run it. The rest should sort of happen automatically (I hope).

Ooops, I'd say envyng-core would be the better choice -- it will pull in whatever else it needs.

Then, when envyng is installed, get out of the GUI altogether, with Ctrl-Alt-F1. Log in to the console with your user name and password. Stop the X server with

            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
            Then run

            Code:
            sudo envyng -t
to run envyng in text mode. When it is finished, you can follow the menu to restart the X server, or else simply restart your system by exiting envyng and issuing
            Code:
            sudo shutdown now -r
            HTH.

And I should have said envyng-qt

Good to have somebody who knows what they are talking about. Morning, dibl

I'm not sure I'd make such a radical claim.

My first thought is to uninstall the drivers installed via Envy, use Adept to install the package 'nvidia-glx-new', use the Hardware Drivers Manager to make sure the 'enabled' box is checked, and reboot your machine.
I still think this way is sooo much easier, just a couple of clicks and its done, especially for a new user. The *only* reason I don't suggest using the Hardware manager *first* is it wants to install the slightly older 'nvidia-glx' package, and the 'nvidia-glx-new' *does* offer useful improvements in performance on this particular card.

I don't disagree, claydoh. If a new user can get it working that way, then that's best, to get started.

But, if someone's in trouble and has a mess to sort out anyway, might as well go for the gold.

It's kind of unsettling that the Restricted Driver Manager produces so many reports of messed up drivers -- it hasn't worked very well on my system either, to the point that I don't even try it anymore. Too bad.

Whatever it was, it is (presumably) now found only in the backed up version of his xorg.conf.

                        I hope ...

/var/log/Xorg.0.log file may give hints why envy didn't install nvidia drivers (1st post)

Ok toad and dibl this it what Synaptic says is already installed on my system:
                            envyng-core
                            envyng-qt
                            jockey-common
                            jockey-kde
                            nvidia-glx
                            nvidia-new-kernel-source-envy
                            nvidia-settings
                            smart-dimmer
                            xserver-xorg-video-nv

and this is what happens when input "/var/log/Xorg.0.log"
                            darrell@harecanada-desktop:~$ /var/log/Xorg.0.log
                            bash: /var/log/Xorg.0.log: Permission denied
                            darrell@harecanada-desktop:~$ sudo /var/log/Xorg.0.log
                            [sudo] password for darrell:
                            sudo: /var/log/Xorg.0.log: command not found
                            darrell@harecanada-desktop:~$

                            What should I do next?

                              On the command line, type
                              Code:
                              envyng-qt
You will be asked for your password and a pretty window will come up which purports to install the NVIDIA driver.

I've never used envy, so good luck

Try my #19 prescription above. As it says, you've got to uninstall first, then install the proprietary driver. Envyng will deal with the nuances, or it should.

As toad says, the envyng-qt will run a graphical front end. But, if you get out of the X server altogether, as I wrote it, then that won't work. So only
                                Code:
                                sudo envyng -t
will run in the console, after you have shut down the X server.
