Keyboard / Input problem, can not type once logged in. - SOLVED

I was playing ksudoku, admit it who doesn't, anyways. It has a feature that says press shift to get hints, so I press the shift key in rapid succession, and then I got and error message, saying something key failed. I only had the option to hit "Ok" so I did. After that the keyboard failed to work. Mouse worked fine, but anything keyboard related failed to work. I also noticed that my volume controller, a little dial on the front of my laptop failed to reduce the sound as usual.

So I restarted the laptop with the mouse, and got to the login screen as was able to type, so I figure what ever it was it reset itself. But once I was logged in as my user the keyboard failed to work.

I reboot again in recover mode, and proceeded to run all 4 recoveries, for the package recovery it even upgraded from version 18 to 19, so I figure everything had to be fix. Unfortunately, no such luck.

So now I figure I better check the logs, I figured the GUI was better since I had you of a mouse, but do you know how hard it is to enter SU access with a password when you do not have a keyboard. I managed to cut and past my password together from grabbing letter from my e-mail, though the unique character were had to find. Anyways, i got in, and looked around and found no error message for the time add date that it happened. Said a few choice words.

So now I am here, wondering how i can get my keyboard up and running again. I finally got Kubuntu to a place, were I don't use the alternative anymore except to play games and well I really can't stand not having my laptop up and running properly.

So any and all help would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much.

No sorry, the key was not stuck in the down position.

      New developments:

I have reboot my laptop so many times,... but the one time a day or two ago after, when I booted my laptop I got this window that popped up. Something, something do you want to deactivate keys..., and gave me three option deactivate, configure window, or terminate. I picked the one, that seem to have more options so that I might diagnose what the heck is going on, because I don't know what this windows is, but it had the word keys in it, so it must have something to do with my keyboard. So I chose configure window, and hit ok. The window went away, I never got a configure window, but my keyboard was working. Thank goodness.

So in short I don't know what I did or what happened, but for four days my keyboard wasn't working on my laptop. I wish I could give more information or say something that would be more helpful, so that if the same thing happens to someone else they would know what to do. But I am just thankful to have my keyboard back.

Anyone is welcome to shed some light on all this, if they can.

Assuming this is KDE 3.5.x, you might want to do Alt-F2, "kcontrol" with no quote marks, and then "Peripherals" and look at the keyboard. If nothing seems unusual there, then look at "Regional & Accessibility" and look at the keyboard layout and keyboard shortcuts. Something may be set wrong there.

I would also want to be certain whether this is a hardware or software problem, i.e. boot a live cd and see whether the keyboard works there. If it doesn't it is time to take your laptop apart...

If it does, dibl might well be onto something. Under SystemSettings select Accessability and check the second and third tabs "Modifier Keys" and "Keyboard Filters".

          Oh, and please report back

If you ever run into this problem again, you have a program installed that will bring up a virtual keyboard. It's called kvkbd under Utilities in the menu.

This looks like the deamon that checks in the background if you hold some modifier key for a certain period of time and then asks you for accessibility options.

Wow, I did not realize so many people responded to the post, did not get a e-mail notification except for the first reply. So please do not think I was being rude in not replying soon. Here we go:

Dibl: It is KDE 3.5.X, but I will take a look. Thank you

Toad: It works with Ubuntu 8.04 live CD, Kubuntu, and recently Knoppix 5.3.1. So I don't think it is hardware. Also I might have forgotten to mention I am not sure, but it works on the installed versionup to the login screen, I could type to login, but as soon as I got past that point and it loaded my settings, the keyboard failed or stopped to working.

Detonate: I have the virtual keyboard installed, and I tried to use it, but I cannot remember why it wouldn't work, but did try it.

Jean: Was thinking along those lines myself, since it asked me to configure it, but not sure why it rendered the whole keyboard and controls useless. And why the actually window never actually opened when I did choose configure.

Re dibl's suggestion - system settings - accessibility - second and third tabs - no box should be checked!

If that doesn't work, could you post part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf - namely the bit starting with:

                  Section "InputDevice"
                  Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Don't know about daemons - Jean?

Here is the exert to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

                    Code:
                    Section "InputDevice"
                        Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
                        Driver "kbd"
                        Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
                        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
                        Option "XkbLayout" "us"
                    EndSection

                    Section "InputDevice"
                        Identifier "Configured Mouse"
                        Driver "mouse"
                        Option "CorePointer"
                    EndSection

                    Section "InputDevice"
                        Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
                        Driver "synaptics"
                        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
                        Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
                        Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
                        Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "0"
                    EndSection
As for the accessibility, the second and third tabs have no checks in any boxes.

Sorry about that. It is solved, but like I mentioned with out a real resolve, or explanation. It just started working again, with no real explanation as to what happened or how to fix it if it was to happen again, or to someone else.

But yes it is working, just not sure how.

Thank you all for your help, I do appreciate your time, and concern.
