Logout causes blank screen in multiuser KDE3.5.9 Hardy 32 bit: Nvidia uncaring

Another fundamental glitch in Hardy 32 KDE3.5.9,
in a multiuser system, logout gives a blank screen needing ctrl-alt-delete to reboot and get out of this and yet another real nuisance.
This is a new installation on a dual core machine, and I wonder how on earth to fix it.

On the other hand another machine , a gutsy upgrade works fine for logout on a single core machine. Gutsy is multiuser OS no problem at all.

In Hardy LTS one can switch user OK, and logout this user, but not logout de novo, the original user or blank screen bug supervenes---- ctrl-alt-delete. seems the only way out other than a hard reboot.

I wonder has anyone else had this problem so far?

I guess, you do ! Anyway... Please note that this behaviour is a known bug in the nvidia drivers on Hardy. Yes, my pc is doing the same black screen thing whenever I logout. I circonvent it by pressing ctrl-alt-backspace, to restart X instead of logging out... Hope this helps...

        Thanx the-linux-guy,

I downloaded kde4 again even though I dislike it to see what happened.
First logout= blank screen, ie something as you say in the crappy linux nvidia driver.

Second even more exciting with pink and white flashing vertical bars, and horizontal black bars.
So I guess its nvidia who does not care about Linux in general.
Apparently their drivers crash MS products so they are in general antisociall.

Read they refuse to release Linux drivers, so more fool them. No more Nvidia cards for me and some flames on their support site
when I feel so inclined, ho hum.

Not me. Granted my machine has a single-core processor, I still have never experienced anything like that with Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy (KDE 3.5.9).

I have that issue. Hit Logout and you end up with a black screen and no action (although I can sometimes get to a console type login screen ................... but I don't know what to do from there !!!)
How can a Video driver prevent a proper shutdown or logoff? I would think it just would not display nicely?
