    Lost pictures using gThumb

I have a disaster and need help.
I had 14 or so pictures in a file and I wanted to rename them. I was using gThumb to do a group rename, figuring it would rename them in sequence. I pressed enter and it asked if I wanted to overwrite the existing and I said yes. Pressed enter and all 14 were replaced with one of the 14!!!
I can't find the others and I can't find any backups. Can someone please help me out?
    I'm running Kubuntu Hardy/KDE3.
I don't know how to find backups or do a restore. I usually keep a copy of everything but not this time.

I came in too late on this, but toad's reference is one of your best bets: PhotoRec is often used and is explained there.

Caution (too late?): try not to write to that drive (which you probably have already done as it is natural to do so, but try this anyway).
I wrote a brief overview of using PhotoRec here:

Data Rescue Links & Comments & Tips
TestDisk -- PhotoRec -- Knoppix (or other Live CDs)

but the PhotoRec site is your source for the how-to.
