    Googleearth fonts - SOLVED

    Hi all,

    I just installed Googleearth 4.3 from the Medibuntu repo. Runs fine except the fonts inside the menu on the left side are way too small to read. Anyone know how to correct this?

      Thank you! That did it. I also had to remove msttcorefonts to make the fonts readable.

        Way Better. I had searched for this before but didn't find this answer to tiny fonts. Thanks.

            Did you install GoogleEarth from the Medibuntu repo or from a downloaded tarball?

              It came from the repositories.
              I found a thread directing me to try installing ms fonts from the repository to fix it, too.
              Have tried that to no avail also.

                Re: Googleearth fonts - SOLVED

                I had not installed GoogleEarth on this Intrepid Ibex experimental system, so I just now did. Since there is no Medibuntu repo for Intrepid yet, I downloaded and installed the new 4.3 Beta version. It worked flawlessly, and it looks just great here -- the fonts in the left panel are small, but very readable. My desktop is 1600x1200 -- that's probably relevant to the appearance of things.

                Here is the ~/.config/Google/GoogleEarthPlus.conf file that it wrote in my home directory:

                Code:
                [General]
                CachePath=/home/dibl/.googleearth/Cache
                ControllerEnabled=false
                ControllerMode=2
                InvertMouseWheel=false
                KMLPath=/home/dibl/.googleearth
                Key="5u1wLlFmjys="
                LogoutClean=false
                ReverseControls=false
                SMode=true
                SwoopEnabled=true
                UID="xmI28y87I1IaoABVuje1ZQ=="
                VID="AAAADTQuMy43Mjg0LjM5MTY="
                currentVersion=4.3.7284.3916
                defaultBrowser=true
                enableTips=true
                lastTip=2
                mouseWheelSpeed=1
                osName=Linux
                renderWarning-OGLsoftwareEmulated=false

                [Layer]
                FlySpeed=0.171
                drivingDirectionsRange=1000
                drivingDirectionsSpeed=150
                drivingDirectionsTilt=45
                pauseTime=1.6
                tourBalloonShow=false
                tourCycles=1
                tourSpeed=0.171

                [Render]
                CompassVisible=true

                [autoupdate]
                InstalledVersion=4.3.7284.3916

                If you don't have a lot of places marked and saved, you might want to consider remove --purging your existing GoogleEarth and installing the downloaded tarball -- your mileage may vary from mine, of course .....

                  hmmm.. my screen res' is set at 1024x768... I think I'll try changing that.

                  I don't have anything "marked or saved"..
                  I can't 'see' the menue to do so..

                    well, by setting the screen res to 1792x1344, .. I can almost read the GE text.

                      Re: Googleearth fonts - SOLVED

                      The conf file that is shown in the Ubuntu Forums thread is for an earlier version, and it has a "GUI" font definition line in it, that yours and mine doesn't have, in the "Render" stanza of settings. So apparently the later versions are getting their screen font information from elsewhere in our system (or not ....).

                        that is what I noticed too.
                        I'm assuming by "tarball" ?.. you mean DLing from the google earth site, or a 'mirror'??

                        Too, "purge" the present GE. Removing it through the synap manager should do that??
                        thanks for your time ..

                          Re: Googleearth fonts - SOLVED

                          Yes, I meant downloaded the 4.3 Beta tarball from the GoogleEarth site here:

                          http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

                          Save it on your Desktop, open the Konsole, cd to ~/grouch/Desktop and then issue
                          Code:
                          sudo sh ./Goo
                          and touch the tab key to get it to finish the tarball name for you. Hit Enter, give your password, and it all happens automagically.

                          To remove the present installation, I would open the Konsole and issue
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get remove --purge googleearth*
                          and perhaps say a little prayer to the monkey-god -- don't hold me accountable for the results. :P

                          You can also try it with Synaptic -- hopefully it will show you what all it is going to rip out.

                            ..looks like I solved it for now, by adding a couple of lines to the [render] file
                            I added
                            Code:
                            GuiFontFamily=Arial
                            GuiFontSize=18
                            just below the "compassvisable=true"

                            I can read the menue and text now!!!
