I am a newbe but it might be helpful for others trying to help if you said what you are upgrading from and to where?

Like which version of kde4?

it's simple. the latest version...

furthermore, this happens each time. and there always some hidden work around.

If I remove the two offenders, it will mean removing everything associated with KDE4
What's worse, forcing an upgrade didn't work...

My updates with:
Intrepid and HH Kde4.1 beta1 to beta2 went without issue.

I used synaptic for intrepid and apt-get update / upgrade for HH
