Since yesterday evening I am attacked over the Internet. My mailbox is stuffed by thousends of messages from the Postmaster in which he tells me that my delivery of emails has failed. All these addresses are in Britain of which I don't know anyone. I haven't send any Brit a message recently, so there is nothing to deliver. It might be that to install virus and spyware is impossible in Linux, but how do I stop this attack? My only recent contact with anyone British is on this forum. Is anyone trying to be funny?

That would be very funny indeed (sarcastic).

I have not heard of such attacks and don't know how the come about, but questions to be asked include:

Does anybody else apart from you have access to your email account?

Which email provider are you using? Maybe they got hacked and you are not the only one suffering from this problem.

Finally, you may want to google "email attacks".

If I were you I would also open a new thread for this subject, as at the mo only those following this thread about "A strange screen" can contribute. That would get more people interested and some may even know what this is or what caused it.

I've seen that kind of attack quite often. It's not that you are infected, someone or some company with your e-mail address is. It's quite annoying as it changes itself quite well and gets through quite a few types of filters.

If it goes on for more than a day, then I'd look at some kind of SPAM filter.

I have a "Plan A" e-mail address, and a "Plan B" e-mail address. Both free -- one is AOL and one is MSN/hotmail. Both accessible via any web browser from anywhere on earth. Not the most sophisticated or powerful arrangement available, admittedly, but I've never been without functional e-mail access in about 18 years now.

Thanks guys. My provider has put a spamfilter on my account and I have installed spamassassin in Thunderbird, so its almost under control now. It could be that Tork has done it, because if used in the normal pop3 traffic, it could reveal instead of hide your email data. So I removed Tork as well.

This is a world-wide problem not limited to the UK.

What has happened is that some spammer has put your e-mail address as the "From" address on their spam. As a lot of addresses the spam is sent to are randomly generated and therefore do not exist, you get the failed notification.

This **** drives me *&^%$%^ crazy.

That is exactly how it happens and yes it's a HUGE headache. No not just in the UK but here in the US as well. Spam Filtering is about all you can do.

Is there anybody who can explain to me the behavior of these people? What is the fun of hindering people you don't even know and of making their mailbox useless? What kind of illness must this be?

Thanks Teunis, I can understand the money argument but not why someone should just jam a mailbox. How can one make money by just sending Postmaster replies to failed sendings? It can't be for the fun either.
