    Can't Sudo Kate! (SOLVED)

I'm fervently hoping to get Kubuntu working well on this old Dell laptop that I want to pass along to my granddaughter, but the frustrations keep coming. Please help me avoid giving her WinXP!

With Kubuntu 8.04, I had the shutdown bug that I could tolerate, but I wasn't about to pass it along to Kathy. I tried the fixes without success.

So I found Kubuntu 8.04.1/KDE4 and installed that. Cool look! And more importantly, the shutdown bug is gone.

When I couldn't find Firefox with Adept, I decided to edit sources.lst with "sudo kate" But sudo said there was no such program as "kate." However, entering just "kate" brought up Kate, but without the ability to do anything useful with it.

How am I going to edit the system text files if Kate won't work with sudo?

I don't know why FF is not in adept package manager

Depending on the version of kde4 you are using it may be different.

but first of all never use sudo with kde apps or any gui apps for that matter.

The safest way is to do:
      alt+F2 and type:
      Code:
      kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate
      give your password.
HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)
      4 GB Ram
      Kubuntu 18.10

        Re: Can't Sudo Kate!

Thanks, guys. The first command wouldn't do it, but the second would. I guess the path is different for bash and sudo, or something like that.

I uncommented a couple of repositories, but still no Firefox. And no Synaptic, either, which is what I'm mostly used to using. Maybe I'm not using Adept correctly. I'm just putting in the names ("firefox"), and all the boxes are checked. But the big list only shows installed stuff, and no matter what I put in the Search field, the big list goes empty: kedit, gedit, kcontrol, joe, bluefish...

I tried unclicking all the "requested" boxes except "no changes," but that didn't do anything.

Sorry... no help here, other than to suggest editing this thread as [Solved] and starting a new one with more appropriate subject line, so you get more traffic.

          Good luck!

Well, it was solved, but maybe an update screwed things up. Now kate from the menu will open just fine, but when opened with kdesudo, its window opens incompletely and then hangs until terminated.

Also, sudo or kdesudo cd reports that "cd" is an unknown command!

There is some other flaky behavior, so that as much as I like the looks of KDE4, I guess I need to look for an 8.04.1 with KDE3... or maybe 4.1!
