    Microphone not working in Skype

    Hi

I've had a good look around, including on the Skype Community site and there doesn't seem to be a fix for this:

Ever since I upgraded to 8.04, Skype has stopped picking up the microphone on my headset, even though I know it works.

I have a vague recollection that this is distro-specific, as it seems to be working elsewhere.

    Any ideas?

Is that a USB "Skype certified" microphone/headset? I wasted a bunch of time trying to get a conventional headset (plugs into sound system jacks) to work with Skype, and it was a revelation to see how fast and easy it works with a USB headset.

I am using Kubuntu 8.04, latest version, Skype and an inexpensive plug-in headset. Works like a charm.

Your problem may just be in the KMix settings. Make sure that on the input tab both indicator lights (green and red) for the mike are on. Also somewhere in the Skype setup are options for the sound device. I had to test all of them before I found the correct one. There are two devices, I believe.

The Skype website has a pretty good support section with step by step instructions on how to trouble shoot the mike. It helped me greatly.

Also, in KMix, open the Mixer window and go to the Switches tab. There you should ensure that Mic Boost (+20dB) has its light set on (yellow).

          Thanks all.

I'd figured the mic boost before and can 'tell' that the mike is working. However it still doesn't work even if both the red and green lights in kmix are on.

Nope, i don't have a USB headset... I shall be getting one.

I let you know if i run into any trouble. btw, are their any good bluetooth headsets I can use, or is it simply best to stick to a USB?

Well bugger me, for some unknown and totally weird reason, turning up the digital slide in kmix works.
Just don't turn it all the way up, lots of static.
Yes, I have spent hours trying to get it working with skype and never considered the digital.
Doesn't make sense, but it works.

This may not apply to you at all, but I had to restart Skype after I adjusted the KMix settings in order for my microphone to work. Just FYI...
