I have installed realplayer 11 and it works correctly. However i cannot get the firefox plugin to work so that when i click on a web-link asking for real player it opens. I need it for some websites (BBC, Defjay) for audio reception and cannot find equivalent open source players.

I just installed RP11 last week in my 64-bit Kubuntu. I had a number of issues but Firefox (3.0b5) wasn't one of them. RP works fine.
"About:Plugins" in FF shows the following:

Perhaps Helix is functioning as some sort of soft link that makes RP work?
