Seamonkey 1.9 crashes in Hardy 32 bit, probably latest kernel a problem.

    Hi
Seamonkey 1.9 crashes frequently in Kubuntu hardy, both as the deb package from the repositories, or as the linux GTK2 1.9 installer from Seamonkey downloads.
Seamonkey 1.8 by comparison is stable when installed in the hardy system.
I wonder why this is so?
    I have the gtk engines-qt-engine installed, apt-get install gtkgtk2-engines gtk2-engines-gtk-qt.
I have not seen such an unstable seamonkey release in linux before.

Having said this the same linux GTK2 1.9 installer from Seamonkey downloads is stable in Gutsy, so it seems a Hardy rather than a seamonkey thing.
Once again I also have the gtk engines-qt-engine installed, apt-get install gtkgtk2-engines gtk2-engines-gtk-qt.

Re: Seamonkey 1.9 crashes in Hardy

Are you using KDE 3.5 / KDE 4 ? (Is there difference ?)

Hmm: Bugs in seamonkey in ubuntu => Is it something like this: seamonkey-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in __kernel_vsyscall() ?

Re: Seamonkey 1.9 crashes in Hardy

      Hi rog131,
this is hardy 32bit using kde3.5, not KDE4.
I will try KDE4 but it sounds like the latest Hardy kernel is to blame, as it was stable prior to this.
The bug report suggests this too.
Pity Kubuntu/ubuntu do not keep the older kernels and list them as boot options as does Debian Lenny---this helps HEAPS in bug reports.
Kubuntu-Ubuntu are really missing the boat here, and Hardy despite release now often feels more like a beta.

But the older kernels are kept, and available in the /boot/grub/menu.lst if, when you are told that a newer /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, you opt to keep your existing file. This is what I do, and I have the following kernel stanzas in my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

          Hi snowhog,
thanx for that, but still a pity that this is not done automatically, as it allows even non geeks to report kernel problems, and Debian Lenny edits this file automagically and presents the kernels without this bother.
Also in the terminal ubuntu hassles you to autoremove all the older stuff.
You have to be aware to even keep older kernels.
          Still a pity!
          Cheers
