Mapping the Windows Key to the KDE Menu

I was playing on my machine earlier and was wondering how to map the Windows key which was initially redundant to the KDE Menu, I.E. when you hit the Windows key the KDE menu activates / pop's up.

I found this website http://docs.kde.org/kde3/en/kdebase/...html#id2552742 and have tried it and it worked absolutely spot on.

Hope this comes in useful for someone

That's useful information. Another, similar way would be to add the following entry to your ~/.Xmodmap (where 'n' is the keycode found by xev).

    keycode n = F13

Now the Win key is perceived as "F13." Then you can go to the Keyboard Shortcuts and add F13 to the "Popup Launch Menu" item.

This method works on other special keys on your keyboard, too. For instance, I map all my media keys to JuK and KMix this way.

The methods smirnoff76 and Snowhog showed are probably more sophisticated and more suitable to be used with KDE than mine, which directly remaps keycodes under X Window.

The only advantage to my method seems to be that it can be applied to any other special keys...

            Glad to hear that.

As for xev, I always run it from the terminal and read the output there as well. I don't think it's specific to any distribution. I am on CentOS 4.6 right now, and the same thing happens with xev here.

Same question, but with Intrepid ibex (kubuntu 8.10). I'm not able to make the windows key let the K menu appear. Any suggestion ?

              Thanks in advance.

same here, I'm running kubuntu 8.10 and the procedure described in the link does not work at all... the menus seem to be quite different... Apparently some key components have been changed... could anyone with more knowledge and experience than me look into this?

                Thanks!

Short-cut keys in Intrepid are, well, non-functional? There are posts on the subject, and I think they relate, not to Intrepid itself, but to KDE 4.1.

                    you mean that:

so we will have to wait for KDE 4.2...? (Jan. 27th?)
