    Multimedia Problems with Hardy Remix

    Kubuntu fans,

I have loved ubuntu, and some kubuntu versions.
PClinuxOS seems to have better functioning for kde
for multimedia though. Our business has tried up
to forty linux systems, but have basically decided
upon ubuntu hardy or gOS. With PCLinuxOS being an
    option for KDE users.

The reason we've made this decision is
    being simplicity for our customers,
and easy operation. We now have finished our beta
version of our own distro based off the new hardy
gnome, it is almost flawless. As we try to convert
folks to Linux stability and safety, it is multimedia
functioning that leads to the most questions. Newbies
don't know terminal or konsole, so simplicity is
    a charm.

Kubuntu Hardy Remix was something we hoped to replace
PCLinuxOS with, but after days of trying to tweak
the multimedia plugins I've about given up. If someone
knows something that can either link Realplayer or
Mplayer plugins correctly and or consistently play
Kaffeine or VLC plugins well. I'm about to give up on
it. I even tried gecko player for both.

One big question. Why is the applications tab blank
in firefox if you install it? This problem leaves it
almost impossible to link your players correctly if
you use anything other than Konqueror's standard.
    Konqueror is way to quirky.

Appreciate your reviews and insights always guys.
    Have a great holiday.

IMHO I think KDE4 is still really in beta and the KDE4 Remix is for testing/evaluation purposes, a lot of stuff appears to be broken in it. Personally I couldn't rely on it for business/personal use, I'm running 8.04 std with KDE3 on my desktop and have a spare PC running the remix for testing.

I'd say try again in 6 months when KDE 4.1 has been released and been run in.

I second that. While the underlying Qt 4 has been out for a while and is getting fairly stable, I've yet to see the same level of stability and robustness in KDE 4. I would not use KDE 4 for business just yet.

Re: Multimedia Problems with Hardy Remix

Have worked some more at tweaking it. My bbc multimedia I now
have going for the most part through mplayer, but vlc is preferable
to me. Other embedding or multimedia links are erratic, especially
within Konqueror. Reverting to Firefox 2 or Epiphany for all
browsing has helped. However, the fact that nothing at all
is listed under the applications menu tab under preferences
is disheartening. I believe the default nature of Konqueror
has something to do with that.

I am going to try in another partition Kubuntu Hardy with the
older KDE to see if its more suitable.

Any suggestions or such let me know.

Re: Multimedia Problems with Hardy Remix

If you mean the Std hardy 8.04 install with KDE3 then I think you'll have much better luck with that, multimedia for the most part seems to "just work"

          Caveats:
          - You will have a better experience by sticking with the KDE Apps (Konquoror etc) then Firefox etc, KDE is the primary platform after all.

          - Sound does seem to be a bit of a problem for some, I know mine worked perfectly under 7.10 but I've had volume and quality issues under 8.04. I'm not up on the issues here but I believe there is some sort of migration to a new sound system going on (Pulse Audio?) and it still has a few quirks.

You could just stick with Gutsy (7.10) and backports for now.
