    Video: dat not supported

    hi All,

In many of my video CDs and DVDs, video file extension has ".dat". But those files are not recognised by any of my softwares.

In kaffine, when I try, it checks for drivers and it ends with an error dialogue box that "already all the plugins are installed".

What can I do to view such video files?

    Regards,
    Srikrishnan

Hmm : ZDNet Definition for: DAT File
(DATa file) A file that uses the .DAT extension. It is widely used for a variety of data content. See extension.

You could try (from the repositories):

    VLC
    multimedia player and streamer

VLC is the VideoLAN project's media player. It plays MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4,
DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, mp3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, and multimedia
    streams from various network sources...

    MPlayer
The Ultimate Movie Player For Linux
It plays most mpeg, avi and asf files, supported by many native and win32
DLL codecs. You can watch VCD, DVD and even DivX movies too. The other
big feature of mplayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It
works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, but you can use SDL (and
this way all drivers of SDL) and some lowlevel card-specific drivers (for
Matrox/3dfx/SiS) too! Most of them supports software or hardware scaling,
so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen...

Nice front-end for MPlayer (Kaffeine is front-end for Xine).
    A great front-end for MPlayer
SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features
like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support
for MPlayer filters and more. One of the main features is the ability to
remember the state of a played file, so when you play it later it will resume
at the same point and with the same settings. smplayer is developed with
the Qt toolkit, so it's multi-platform.

      Hi Rog131,

      Thanks for your help.

Yesterday I have installed Mplayer and SMplayer in my system. Eventhough I am not able to view video files.

when I try to play the video cds using Mplayer and SMplayer, there is no response.

When I try to select the "dat" file through Mplayer open dialog box, it popped up "seek failed" error dialogue box.

When I try to select the "dat" file in SMplayer. It trys to read the CD (few seconds cd drive lights blinking) but there is no response.

      Regards,
      Srikrishnan

        Getting more info:

        Example:

I have a cd with .dat video files. Inserting cd > New medium query > Open in New Window => path to the .dat files is : /media/cdrom0/Movies/

        In the konsole:
        Code:
        logsave playing_dat.txt mplayer /media/cdrom0/Movies/intro.dat
File is playing ok => output attached.

Do you have errors when trying to play ?

        man logsave

          Re: Video: dat not supported

My guess: you've actually got VideoCDs / SVCDs, in which case you'd need to use the "Open Disc" option in VLC and select Video CD in order to play it, rather than select the file yourself. (For mplayer, use something like "mplayer vcd://".)

              Re: Video: dat not supported

Can you play with the VLC ?

Can you copy avseq37.dat to the hard drive ? Is it playing from the there ?

=> Bug: Can't copy VCD ".dat" files from CD to Hard Drive
I tried this on a VCD on my machine, and immediately when trying to copy a file the same error was shown - which suggests it is not the end of the file. I then tried to play the .dat file in mplayer, which also failed with "Seek Failed". So it must be something else.

Just to clear any idea that it might be specific hardware (which I doubt), it might be worth putting which drive hardware is being used. I am using an External USB2 LG DVD+-/RW Model 8SA-2164D...

also problem in playing *.dat file with "Mplayer", seek failed
I can play *.dat file from my hard with Mplayer , but when i want to play *.dat file from CD-ROM Mplayer show : Seek failed
