Kaffeine borked! Will not play dvd's as user in Hardy 32 bit---

    Hi
Hardy LTS 32 has borked Kaffeine as user.
I live in Oz and need libdvdcss to play our region 4 DVD's.
However Kaffeine from Hardy repos will not recognise any codec, and despite the codec being installed, refuses to look at it and offers to install it but bombs out.
    Very disappointing.
Gutsy has no issues here, so I guess the hardy Kaffeine package is the prime bork offender.
    Installing xine-ui is no better.
So despite Gutsy offering to upgrade to Hardy, no thanx, unless there is a fix.

Just wonder if it is lack of user permissions again?
I'll run Kaffeine as root soon and experiment.
Meantime I hope LTS will keep improving.
I do not see other posts on this so it may be peculiar to silly Hollywood region 4.

Re: Kaffeine borked! Will not play dvd's---

    Hi,
I enabled root login GUI in Hardy LTS

    sudo kate
    password

    /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
    scroll down
    enable default root login
    reboot.

Then sure enough region 4 dvd's played with libdvdcss2 installed as root GUI.
    logged back into user,
and then DVD's played as user too.
Guess it is a permission thing and if root says OK then it is OK but only temporarily.
On reboot back to square 1!

This DVD Video is encrypted. To be able to watch it you will need to install libdvdcss by running from a console: sudo /usr/share/doc/kaffeine/install-css.sh. In some countries it is illegal to install the decryption software without permission from the video copyright holder..

and this does not work either!!
    Very flaky
    Developers please fix.

    Best

Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (not LTS /1/) has lot of small glitches/bugs/or what ever...

Is your user in the video group ?

K > System Setttings > User Management > Secondary Groups

      Here:
adm, dialout, cdrom, floppy, audio, dip, video, plugdev, scanner, lpadmin, netdev, powerdev, admin

Hardy small glitches: Topic: Multimedia Problem: Maybe you don't have enough rights...(e.g: no disc in drive)
      - Summary: Media players are looking /dev/dvd, but there are /dev/dvd1 => error

If Kaffeine can't play file/dvd => It tries to install codecs.

A bit larger glitch: Topic: CD / DVD reading problem
      - Summary: Hardware (dvd) not detected.

        Thanx rog131,
I fired up sudo kcontol from the terminal.
Video etc was enabled but was doing no good.
        Went to user management
Modified the user to primary group "root"
And now dvds play as user with libdvdcss2.

I do not know if this was a sledgehammer approach but was all that worked as user on Hardy latest release here in Oz.
Once again the Alphas and the Betas gave no issue here, it is only the 'stable' latest release that is so obtuse on my machine.
I think we are still rather beta so far with all the errors still in Hardy.
        Gutsy still behaves better too.
        Cheers
