    Firefox 3.0b Associating Applications

I cannot get Firefox to open a .pdf or a .doc or .xls or any Open Office file contained in a web site. The main problem is getting email attachments containing these file types to open when accessing my mail remotely using web mail.

When I go to the Edit | Preferences dialog the Applications section is blank. I cannot get any listing of programmes in the Search field and the content and Action fields are blank as well. I have had a hunt around but my novice eyes cannot spot a possible solution.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

    Roy

      Re: Firefox 3.0b Associating Applications

Tried a Firefox forum on the 20 May, still no reply

      Need more luck

Have tried examining some of the Firefox files that are marked read/writable and looking as if they may be something to do with configuration but nothing obvious and until I am confident about what I may be doing do not wish to experiment. OK I could copy the file then amend it and replace it if a disaster occurs but don't wish to use the time in that way.

      Cheers

I think many others have these problems too. The Application Options is also blank for me, and I think this is a known bug for the Firefox 3 beta. So I think the best way is to go back to Firefox 2. It's quite irritating when you want to open a certain file and you have to manually search for the executable in your computer.

I also have the same problem on Firefox 3 Beta 5 -Kubuntu Hardy on AMD 64 bit platform. The may be a fix/workaround here in launchpad bugs:

          http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+so....0/+bug/220798

I tried it (install firefox-gnome-support) and at least I have something showing up in the applications area. Several of them are not correct, but I'm assuming I can at least modify them to be the correct KDE applications.
