    Video problems KDE4

I try to use the latest Kubuntu KDE 4 (4.04 now, I think) most of the time. But I watch many videos (AVI files, other XVid files, DVD, etc. etc.). To watch most things, I use VLC, though I also use Kaffeine and Mplayer.

Everything works great under KDE 3.5.9 (and has always worked great...since 3.5.5, I'd guess).

I'm working with a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04 with both KDE 3.5.9 and KDE4.

But the same videos that run under KDE 3.5.9 get unbearably choppy and erratic under KDE 4.04. It happens under VLC and it happens under Kaffeine and it happens under Mplayer.

Has anyone had a similar experience and does anyone have any suggestions about what the problem might be?

you need to mention which video card & drivers you are using.

btw, i think the best media player is smplayer. (it is a super-awesome mplayer frontend). kaffeine is my second choice.

ATI video card with fglrx drivers.

I use Smplayer sometimes, but actually prefer Kmplayer for Mplayer frontend. Lately, I've been using gnome-mplayer as a front end because the new plugin for Firefox (Gecko, 3.0 or higher) is a huge improvement over mozilla-mplayer plugin and that plugin uses gnome-mplayer.

I just installed an ATI card on my system (Radeon 1300) and video was choppy in every application. AMD website led me to this wiki http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring. Running the video acceleration (xv overlay) seemed to do the trick.

        Code:
        sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
        Matt
        Stumper
