    run command (ALT+F2 ) doesn't get focus

    Hi together,
I'm on an IBM T61 with Hardy / Compiz Fusion.

Not sure whether this really is a problem or configured as such on purpose - however I find it annoying >, and maybe some of you cracks know the trick:

-suppose you're working on multiple applications
-some of them are in the foreground (black script in taskbar), others in the background (gray script in taskbar)
-now I hit ALT+F2, I can see the run command window appearing in the taskbar, but it doesn't get focus
-I'd need to switch with ALT+TAB across all my foreground applications, until I reach the run command window

I was playing with the window behaviour in system settings as well as with focus & raise behaviour in Compiz' general settings, but couldn't make it. Any suggestions ?

When the run command icon is on the taskbar, can you right-click it and choose "always on top"? Maybe you first choose "advanced" and then "always on top"?

      Hi Dibi,
thanks for your suggestion. I just tried:

      - ALT+F2
-right click with mouse on taskbar icon
-menu "advanced/keep above others" is the nearest I can get

If I chose it, it basically brings the 'run command' window to the foreground, but still does not have focus. Also, the next time I hit ALT+F2, it's again neither in the foreground, nor does it have focus.
      Any other suggestions?

The way I cope with that (other than using all 4 sides of my Compiz cube) is when I open a new window, I move it so I can always see a bit of the top bar. If you click that little piece of the top bar, then it becomes the focus window and moves to the foreground. But, I don't know how to control where the Alt-F2 window will open. :P

Hi Dibi, thanks for the workaround!
Actually I try to avoid the pointing device. And since when opening other windows they also popup with focus, it must be a setting thing I guess. But where?

Any other ideas? Do other users usually get focus for the 'running command' window after pressing ALT+F2?

            I do, but I don't use compiz.

I do, and I am running Compiz. What controls this? Don't know, and as I've not had the problem, I've not been in the position to go looking for it. Hmm.

This happens to me 'ocassionally', like some other things that happen randomly.

Re: run command (ALT+F2 ) doesn't get focus

I figured out how to solve this issue for Kubuntu Hardy (without Compiz thingy):

                  - Right Click on the title bar of an arbitrary window and select "Configure Window Behavior..."
                  - Go to the "Advanced" tab
                  - Change "Focus stealing prevention level" to "None"
                  - Restart the X Server (don't know if this is really necessary, but for me it was)

                  Hope this helps someone else.

                  Cheers,
                  Cornelius

                    Hello

I had the exact same problem and thanks to cornelius I could solve it.

It is really coming from the focus prevention mecanism.

To access the settings with compiz, launch the "Compiz Config Settings Manager", and then "General options" > "Focus and raise behavior" and play with the settings.

It worked for me either by setting the focus prevention level to "off" or leaving it a "low" and changing the "focus prevention windows" parameter to "(any ) & !(class=Kdesktop)". Note that the latter looks like a bit too wide for me, it probably affects other windows than the run command dialog but I couldn't make it with another selector. If somebody get the right settings, please post...

                    Anyway thanks cornelius !
