How come I can watch WMV files?

    Hi.

This may be a weird question. I don't have Windows codecs (w32codecs) installedon my Kubuntu 8.04 computer, yet I can watch WMV files using Kaffeine. Why is that?

Not that I am complaining... I was going to install the codecs anyway. I'm just wondering if there's an Open Source version of WMV codecs that come with Kubuntu.

    Thanks!
    Dai

    Maybe it is this:
    Windows Media Video wiki
Many third-party players exist for various platforms such as Linux that use the FFmpeg implementation of the WMV codecs.

    More:

    - FFmpeg wiki
    - ffmpeg on Ubuntu

    Mediubuntu ffmpeg:
This package is built with the "risky" option, to enable mp3/mp4/h264/amr
support. Therefore, it is in Medibuntu as it might violate patents.

This package isn't supported by Ubuntu: DON'T REPORT BUGS TO UBUNTU!

      Rog131,

Thanks for the response. I do have ffmpeg installed, but IIRC, I was already able to watch WMV before I even enabled the Medibuntu repo. Such a mystery...
