When I try to install Alien using Adept I get a message requesting that the Kubuntu 8.04 RC disc be inserted into the drive. I do not understand why it does this surely it should be in the repository?

you will need to disable your cd's entry in Adept's Manage Repositories dialogs, It looks like it is set up to use your cd as a repository -
