      Re: kontact ain't kontactin'

as the backtrace notes many references to
      /usr/lib/kde3/libakregator_mk4storage_plugin.so
I renamed it ~plugin.bak and ran it from KMenu

I get one error "KLibLoader could not load the plugin "libakregator_mk4storage_plugin.so" because it can't find it, then another "unable to load storage plugin "metakit" No feeds are archived"

and then the Kontact package opens
      Akregator feed shows 24 posts (dating 25/08/04 - 3/11/06
      PlanetUbuntu feed shows 40 dated 1/6/08 - 4/6/08
      just to give two examples.
If I delete some and restart, the same thing happens when I restart Kontact, and the same feeds are there.

just in case that offers a clue to someone ...

I am NOT launching from the command line, but Kontact crashes from Kmenu.
Oddly, I can call kmail from command line. From within kmail, I can also access my address book. Even the spam assassin seems to be working.

I thought I replied to this yesterday, but somehow the reply got lost.
I for my part am not launching Kontact from the command line. However, I launch kmail from the command line, and it behaves impeccably.. From kmail I can launch the address book, which also behaves well. Ergo, the problem resides not in them but in some other module of Kontact.

I was interested in Groundhog's suggestion to check "group ownership" in Konquerer - but I do not run Heron 4, just heron 3.5, How to do this?

In Konqueror, ensure you are in your user directory. Click on View > Show Hidden Files and then right-click on the .kde folder and select Properties > Permissions. You should be listed for User and Group.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
