Did you attempt to add any plugin to Kontact before you started seeing segfaults? I do remember seeing something similar when I added the Exchange plugin to Kontact, though that was on a different Linux distribution.

Same here. Actually, it stopped working yesterday. I too get
        "signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

and no, to my knowledge I did not attempt to add any pluggin. What I did do was to configure toolbar, because the spam assassin icons had disappeared. When I put the icons back, the program crashed and returned the signal. Tried to wipe out all contact files after removing the prog with adept, but reinstall gave the same result.
        Why?

          Re: kontact ain't kontactin'

I tried posting my issue to <kdepim-users@kde.org> and was advised to try creating a new user account to see what happened: behold: Kontact (and all its various components) start and run normally. So it must be something in 'my' config files that is borked. I asked what to delete/rename and where?

          <Reply> says:
The easiest way is to rename ~/.kde to ~/.kdeOld, then log out and back in. A
new, clean set of files will be set up. You can then copy back all your
mail, contact and organizer settings, but do it one at a time and test each
          step.

If you need other files look in /.kde/share/config. Just avoid anything that
could remotely be connected with akregator.
          </Reply>

I have not tried this ...

I resorted to doing that on a different Linux distro (CentOS 4.6) after Kontact kept crashing on me since I'd added a plug-in. It's not pretty. Recreating a fresh ~/.kde means all the customizations and preferences you've made in KDE must be reapplied. That's a PITA... definitely the last resort if you ask me.

              Hi

Yes, last resort. I imagine this must be a bug. Should we not file it as such? And if so, how. I am away from home now and have to resort to cybercafes for internet.

As for pluggins, the only fancy stuff I have is skype and I've have that for a long time without contact acting up no me. This happened so suddenly!

May I ask why you attempted to launch kontact (a GUI application) from the command line? If it's properly installed, it is located in K Menu > Internet > Kontact (KDE 3.5.9)
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I'm still thinking it's borked config files somewhere, since it works finest kind under a different user on the same machine ... I just don't know where to find them or what to do if/when I do find them ...

I have never seen this kind of problem before. If you are not running 64bit please try the equivalent Debian. (64bit Debian Testing fails to install at the moment)

I am too drunk to say any better.
I hear you- think I"ll go do the same :-)

I haven't either :-) the truly odd thing to me is that it all works fine if I create a new user. So it makes sense to me that it's _my_ config files that are the problem. I just don't know what to look for, or where to look for them :-(

If it is an ownership issue somewhere within your ~ folder, you could consider navigating to /home (specifically) in Konqueror, clicking on your user folder, clicking Properties > Permissions and ensuring that Group is set to your user name, then checking Apply changes to all subfolders and their contents (keeping mind, these steps are from within Konqueror running KDE 4).
