Keyboard shorcuts and Conflict with standard application

How do I assign a global keyboard shortcut that is already assigned to a standard application.
When I try to assign the back key on my keyboard to switch between desktops I get the following message.

"The 'Back' key combination has already been allocated to the standard action "Back" that many applications use.
You cannot use it for global shortcuts for this reason."
