    Running programs

    Hi,

    I'm looking for an app that can show all started apps in the current session, this app must be able to show all the started apps, dependencies and give the ability to kill apps.

    I had an instance where Kontact hanged, I forced quite it and tried to start it again but to no avail.
    The solution was to restart the whole machine.

    Can anybody help me?

    OS = Kubuntu 8.04 Kde 3

    Re: Running programs

    ksysguard has a tree view option on running processes, and I am sure there are others available via adept that have similar features.

    If Kontact hangs again, I would suggest simply logging off your user account, then re-log in.

    Also, killing an app by force often leaves a "lock" file behind, which probably prevented you from restarting the application. These files exist simply as a way to prevent more than one instance of something running at the same time. Kontact itself doesn't have one, but kmail does, located in /home/<username>/.kde/share/apps/kmail. Other kontact-related apps have these as well, such as kontact's address book (kabc) and akregator, its rss feedreader. It might be quicker and easier to check for those and delete them after making sure the apps are not running.

      One can also utilize the 'magic key sequence' to safely shutdown the system and reboot:

      Alt+SysReq+R+S+E+I+U+B

      Press and hold the Alt+SysReq (PrtSc) keys together. Then, one at a time, and in order, the R, S, E, I, U, and B keys.

      This key sequence is also used when your keyboard 'appears' to be locked and unresponsive. Using this procedure is much better than reaching for the power off button on your PC, which should be used only when nothing else works.

          It's already installed on a default Kubuntu setup under "system" in your k menu
