KDM all greyed out

hi
i just installed kubuntu 8.04 kde 4 version and am very happy with it. i've had two problems so far
1)i'm not able to make any changes in kdm. how do i login as root?
2)my default language seems to be something other than english. when i press ' followed by m it shows it as ḿ
how do i fix this?

there should prob. be a button for kdm called administrative mode. as for the i don't know.

Sounds like the 2nd problem is your keyboard layout is set to the wrong layout. I think you can change that in System Settings.
