    v8.04 KDE4 DVD DL/install? [plus, security stuff]

Is there a version of Hardy v8.04 with KDE4 remix on DVD?

Alternatively, I saw in one post that it was possible to start with KDE3.x and install latest KDE, which would in effect be much the same.

However, relatively new to Linux; never successfully done "compile"; and, I am unsure how to do this. Some experience with several distro's, including enough command-line to install and boot older Knoppix from flash drive. Tried before neuro insults to get Syslinux to similarly boot UBCD4Win; and, happily, looks like someone recently may have figured it out.

With bugs reported, would it be better to use the 3.x stable anyway; or would new KDE features make that worthwhile? Also, is the DVD enough different with extra really useful stuff to go for DVD instead of live-CD?

I am likely to run either live-CD/DVD or read-only USB install, [info below]. Mostly a Windows guy, though trying to learn Linux; but SOHO, significantly including family, will want ASAP secure Windows O/S & apps environment, after which I can explore open-source once past crisis.

    <- end main question ->

I am likely to use either live CD or install to flash drive as I am in the midst of the most phenomenally extensive, dedicated, hard-core, sys-admin hacking attempt -- beyond, in fact, anything I'd ever imagined or heard about from malware, rootkits, botnets, crackers, anything -- to my windows-based network and workgrouped PC's. Hence, turning to Linux to try to slow them down.

Part of it seems to be Windows Server command-line commands, requiring enterprise authority I do not think even found in any desktop groups, to either enact or back-out. The extent of registry changes is stunning every time I go deeper to look.

I had heard it would be possible to use described-as simple Linux distro on old machine to be more heavy-duty firewall and router. I hope to find more info about this, but our network/ Internet/ e-mail is compromised by cracking. Ideally, I would secure all main machines and network, and then somehow also create intrusion-detection system, and hang out 'honeypot'.

Yes, I know this is Kubuntu forum. I am limited in several regards, including knowing where to turn for help and advice, equipment, time, and mental capacity. Yep, that's right; I recently had second concussion while recovering from encephalitis, and this stuff literally makes my head hurt. I apologize in advance if simple DVD/KDE4 question has been thoroughly covered elsewhere, but 'Net search now painfully difficult and poor.

Couple years ago discovered SNORT, but setup and run was unfathomable; and, like many open-source forums, if you have to ask,.... Well, I did not receive the clear, simple, usable info, me/I -- what my bubby called an 'umbie-day'-- required.

Need to start with secure environment for O/S, apps, and 'Net access; >Linux, with which I have to hope assailants are hampered as much as possible. If not, maybe read-only DVD will minimize damage.

Could not get Knoppix v4.3.1 to let me login last night as root to configure networking to get on-line. Got to your forum today on Mandriva, less than wholly satisfying. Trying Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu because all here seem to adapt better to KDE than Gnome, hence particular interest in v3 vs. v4.

Plan: 1)Secure main network and PC's; 2)firewall, first locking out intrusion now bypassing present software & hardware firewalls plus regular O/S protections, [in fact using group/local policy against us]; 3) after 1 &2 concrete, gathering packet info for forensics.

I note that, although I believe initial attack sailed in over network, both physical and brand-new virtual machines have had damaging core changes made while disconnected from any network. ISP and I both have suspected also virus/malware, but so far, none turned up in any of many extensive scans, including for rootkits and HijackThis.

Sorry; several have said, after illness & injury, my communication now difficult and often sprawling, frustrating & annoying everyone, including me. But, not yet recovered to reclaim former efficiency. Thank you for understanding and assistance!

*[If admin/mod thinks best to separate into 2 questions, totally OK with me].

    Thanks again; best, Smilin'Jim.

Oh, yes, sometimes forum-requested: most PC's here nForce2 w/ AMD AthlonXP+ ~2500, although also affected, both new Gateway i945 laptop and old i845 IBM notebook, and soon to build system with Abit SH6 i815 mobo, (looking for 1GHz Slot-1 PIII, 133FSB). [all x86, 32-bit]. Most systems Vista Ultimate SP1, some XP Pro SP2/3.

Knoppix from disc and flash-drive, Mandriva to USB; thought had downloaded Kubuntu over weekend, but have seen several mysterious Twilight-Zone "restore-points" back out various changes and data. Some other Linux distro's downloaded not yet burned couple months back. Almost completely unsure about BSD. Also, booting sometimes from BartPE + XP based UBCD4WIN, but seem to need new build to be able to download OK new SP1 builds from Technet for fresh, clean installs.
