Desktop icons

I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of the ring around my desktop icons like in the OpenSuse 11 live cd?
this ring only fades in when you hover with the curser in the opensuse distro and it seems a little better for me because my desktop is cluttered enough without the extra ring always around my icons. Dont get me wrong though I love the way it looks normally but when you get a bunch of icons on the desktop thats when it starts to look a mess. Anyone know how to do this? Im sorry, I forgot to mention that this is in kde4. its just the background of the icon that im trying to get rid of.

Im not sure exactly what you are talking about but i do remember seeing something like a ring based icon selection on kdelook.org was one of the high rated downloads - sorry cant remember much more
