Contents of / are displayed on the desktop (kde 3.5.9) - path set correctly.....

    Hi.

After an upgrade from gutsy (originally feisty) I can see (from some users) the entire contents of / on the desktop,

    i.e /bin
        /dev
    , etc

      - they are not shortcuts so can't remove them .

Also when I  ls -la /home/user/Desktop I see completely different files

others are mentioning the same thing on ubuntuforums.

Please has anyone got any ideas  ?

Sounds like the folder used for the desktop has got itself set as /

You should be able to fix this by Going to System Settings > About Me > Paths, and enter the path you want to use for the desktop.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Double check the path. You might want to use the little folder icon to navigate to it, instead of typing. I've just reproduced what you're describing by entering /home/user/desktop instead of /home/user/Desktop

PS: When it offers to move the files from / to /home/user/Desktop (or whatever), CHOOSE CANCEL! It will still (hopefully) fix the path. It should be apparent what chaos might result from trying to move everything on your disc into a folder.

Also, I can read files in /root/ too. The default under Linux is usually that stuff is world readable.

PPS: Oh crap...now I've got the exact same problem :-@. Set back to my Desktop folder and still showing root. Damnit. I should use a VM for such tests.
