Folders don't allow files to be stored in them

I just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04, and then installed KDE4. Everything looks fine, except for the behavior of my folders. I can open folders but I can't move files into them. For example, if I move a file from the desktop to my "documents" folder, the file will just sit there on top of the documents folder icon. If I move the folder, the original file is left there on the desktop. Same thing with the trash. When I move a file onto the trash icon, it just sits there on top of the trash icon. I open the trash, and the file is not there (still on the desktop). One other thing, the trash icon did not have the proper icon. It had a "?".

Any ideas on what to do next?

it seems a little wierd when you move from KDE3 to 4...I believe the icons you are seeing on your KDE4 desktop are widgets, not folders. So, the easiest way to get things from your desktop to a new folder is to actually go into dolphin (file viewer) to ~/desktop and drag and drop from there. then you can delete the widgets from your desktop. At least that is what I did...

Okay, I opened dolphin and within dolphin (split view), I was able to move my files from the desktop to a folder. Also, I opened my "documents" folder and discovered that I am able to move files from one subfolder to another (again using split view) and from a folder to the desktop. However, I can't move a file from the desktop to a folder! Is there a setting that controls the behavior of an object when you put your mouse cursor over it? I think that when I try to drag a file into a folder from the desktop, the folder is not being "activated" (excuse my lack of proper terminology). Any suggestions?
