OpenOffice 2.4Kubtunut-6 and java - setting won't stick

    Hi,

I updated my Kubuntu 7.1 ( AMD 64) to 8.04 the other day ( over the internet update) - this is the remix with KDE4

Immediately after the OS update I got the notice to update OpenOffice. ( Normally I replace the OO.o install with the vanilla 64 bit built available at linux.cz by the way - but before the OS update at reverted back to Kubuntu Distro version. )

My 7.1 installation was setup with SUN java ONLY.

OK - after the OpenOffice.org update I have had no luck getting OO.o to use Java I have tried:

Remove every OO.o and Java files and put back:
Kubuntu distro OO.o and gcj files - OO.o says that the java version is defective.
Install SUN 1.5 and tell OO.o to use it. The setting will not hold ( OO.o Options > Java displays the correct JRE, selecting it and closing the dialog then opening it again...the setting is lost )

    REMOVED everything again.
Installed OO.o 2.4 vanilla 64bit and SUN 1.5 - I can get almost the whole package to work - IF I do not install the Base package. As soon as I try to install the Base package the system tries to bring in one of kubuntu OO.o files ( seems it feels this is a dependeny ) and the whole java mess starts again.

First - question. Am I the only one having problems on this platform?
Second - question. Now what? LOL

    Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what the deal is, but try setting Sun's java as your default:
    Code:
    sudo update-alternatives --config java
Then, if you are going to try sticking with Ubuntu's OpenOffice, make sure you have the openoffice.org-java-common package installed:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-java-common
Finally, try choosing your JRE from OOo's settings again and see if that helps.

Same problem. openoffice.org java is installed. None of the java options in Tools/Options/java gets a result.

Hmm...I'm not exactly sure where OOo keeps its settings, but I believe it would be in ~/.openoffice.org2. Try renaming that directory to something like ~/.openoffice.org2.bak, which will force OOo to recreate a default one, and see if your changes stick then (you can restore the old one by deleting the recreated one and renaming ~/.openoffice.org2.bak to ~/.openoffice.org2).

Thanks integr8e. Initialising a new openoffice.org2 solves the problem The relevant file is openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml. So as I wanted to keep all other config options I just pasted the new javasettings_Linux_x86.xml into the original openoffice.org2

Cool beans! I'll put that one in my mental toolbox for future reference

              I did
              mv javasettings_Linux_x86.xml _javasettings_Linux_x86.xml
              in
              /home/claus/.openoffice.org2/user/config
              and then restarted OpenOffice.
              Then it worked.
(This is for me more clear than the above)
