    WINE and the 2.6.24-16 Kernel

Upgraded to 8.04RC (and the daily updates since) and I'm having trouble running my favorite old windows program in WINE. It ran fine with the 2.6.22-14 kernel in both 7.10 and even 8.04, but with the 2.6.24-16 kernel it won't run at all.
With the WINE 9.59 that came with 8.04RC it gave a "no 16 bit support" error message.
Now with WINE 9.60 it gives the following message,

preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
    fixme:spoolsv:serv_main (0 (nil))
winevdm: unable to exec 'H:\ahed\ahd3.exe': DOS memory range unavailable

WINE will run other ms products, such as office, which I really don't need as I prefer OpenOffice,
but I use the old 16 bit "American Heritage Electronic Dictionary" program several times a day and would really like to get it working again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

If you press Esc to get the GRUB prompt when booting, do you get the option to use the older kernel?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Not necessary as the older kernel is listed in the GRUB menu.
However, since installing 8.04, Sane/Xsane will no longer under under the older, 2.26.22-14 kernel, and as I need to scan, often on a daily basis, I would prefer to use the newer kernel.
If I end up having to boot a different kernel to scan, I might as well boot back to ms windows XP where the HP scanning software does a FAR better job of scanning than Sane/Xsane.

BTW, all this, WINE and Xsane ran perfectly in Kubuntu 7.10. Well as perfect as Sane/Xsane can run.
That has been my biggest problem since converting my personal and business computers to Linux full time, and that is, the scanning software sucks. I was, until I installed Kubuntu 8.04, running the HP scanning software inside of XP, inside VMware, as it is so far superior to Sane/Xsane it was worth going to the trouble to set it up that way. "Upgrading" to Kubuntu 8.04 completely trashed my VMware setup and I haven't had the time to re-install it.
