    KDE4 ontop of KDE3

Hi i have been playing around with KDE and like it, two main things i dont like is how everthing now seems bigger ( icons, menus i know its adjustable but kde3 has a more professional feel to it ) and that i have had a few desktop crashes.
If i install KDE3 804 the want KDE4 ontop of it, will i have lots of desktop program conflicts? i currently have KDE ontop of an ubuntu install and the conflicts are driving ( wifi profiles, sound settings, etc..)
    Thanks:<br />Using a Toshiba A300-21H ,3GB ram,Intel Core2Duo 2Ghz,Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD,intel wifi link 5100. Tux wants you!

Not according to my experience. I installed 8.04 (Alpha 5 at the time) and then kde4-core immediately, and have used KDE4 exclusively for about 5 weeks now, with minimal issues on the desktop.

It appears that people who want to go back and forth between KDE3 and KDE4 logins, or especially people who try to un-install one of them after they have installed both, are the ones having trouble.

Thanks i would be interested in switching between 3.5 and 4 for various things, does anyone have experience of anything that just doesnt work in 4 but does in 3.5 ( eg wireless settings )

        dibl,

I am one of those having trouble switching back and forth.

        Two things:
I like kde4...but NO PRINTING?! Are you printing? How?
When I try switching back to kde3, my keyboard is frozen, mouse input is OK, but no text entry is possible...any suggestions

        God bless

Interesting that 'cos my numberpad on the keyboard is not working. Checked the system settings for keyboard and it's clearly marked numlock = on but on reboot it's off and numberpad dead. Printing is OK.

I installed my Epson C-84 in KDE4 and it prints just fine. I used my browser and entered "localhost:631" and installed it that way. Make sure you have the foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, and foomatic-db-gutenprint packages installed.

Numlocks don't come on automatically, even if you set it in kcontrol to "numlocks on startup = on". This is a bug -- I expect it will be fixed. Someone posted a way to work around it the other day, but I was away from my system and didn't remember it.

Most of your needed KDE3.5-only apps, like K3b, are available through KDE4, so I would say you'll have better luck just using KDE4 than trying to switch logins.
