Can't Change settings in Login Manager

For some reason I can not change any settings in Login Manager. I want to add new login themes but it says that it is not enabled and i go to enable and its all grayed out. Do I have to do it in root and if so how? Kinda new to linux so if this is a dumb question...sorry. :-)

PS. Not caring to much for new KDE. Its live vista... I'm going to "Upgrade" to XP... only back to kde 3.5. But i will give this a fair chance...

K Menu > System Settings > Advanced > Login Manager

Click on the Administrator button at the bottom right. You will then be able to access the options on all the tabs.

I don't have an Administator Button. I had thought of that because I remember it in KDE3.5 but I don't see it here.
All i have is Apply on the right, and on the left defaults, help, and reset.

Hmm. Okay, try accessing it via 'the other door.'

        Press Alt+F2 and type kcontrol
Select System Administration > Login Manager

Do you have an Administrator Mode button?

I went into the terminal and typed kcontrol. It said its not installed. IDK if that means anything but...

Something isn't right with your system. I opened a console and typed kcontrol and was presented with the KDE Control Center application. Did you try pressing the Alt+F2 keys? Were you presented with the Run Command window?

Yes when i hit alt-f2 a window opens and tells me to enter the name of an application, location, or search term. i typed kcontrol but the launch button is greyed out. it wont do anything. it just lets me type away.

Re: Can't Change settings in Login Manager

How did you install Hardy on your PC? Was it an upgrade from Gutsy, or a fresh install? Not to be guessing, but you are running the Kubuntu version of Hardy, yes??

If you are missing some packages (sounds like it), you can open Adept Manager and mark kubuntu-desktop for installation, or, you can do it from the console with:
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Re: Can't Change settings in Login Manager

I downloaded it fresh from kubuntu.org. It is the 8.04 KDE4 Remix cd. This is my second install and i checked the disc for errors before installing. I booted up and the install went without a glitch.

Let me try to run that code and I will let you know... thanks!

No need. 8.04 KDE4 Remix - KDE4 isn't fully finished. There are functions that don't completely work and/or are not present. I'm addressing your issue from a KDE 3.5.9 environment.

OH. That would explain what I was just about to tell you. I did that update and it seemed to install the control center from KDE 3.5 Soo.. now is there a way i can uninstall kde 4 and go to 3.5 without completely reinstall using a different cd? I don't like kde 4 much anyhow.

Re: Can't Change settings in Login Manager

Likely, but I'm not the one to advise you on how. But, if you haven't had this installed long, and you haven't made a lot of customizations, it may just be quicker (and more reliable) to just download the 8.04 Beta (uses KDE 3.5.9) LiveCD and just start over.
