any good HOW-TO's for vmware?

I'm about to move a charity build out of the house, that means I can start working on my build.

Hardy 32 bit on rig in sig

I've searched here and other places and haven't found a good how to guide to show me the steps.

I need to have XP in VM for a few flash sites, abc.com - move player etc.

Do I need an NTFS or FAT32 partition to do this?

Any good links or tips?

should get you started.

For sharing install and set up samba.

It makes no difference if you you use ntsf / fat or ext3 for giving your virtual machine a place to live on.

You are welcome. yeah seamless is a nice feature. Bythw vmware just released vmware WS 6.5 beta with unity for testing.

It installes just like player under hardy (any-any-116-patch)

you may have to run:

vmware-networks --postinstall ws,0,1

from:
/usr/bin

As for viruses, etc., well basically you are safe as the Internet is "controlled" by your host (Linux) and your local files are not contaminated.

As a precaution I installed clam anitvirus and avscan as a fronten. Then point it to my /Data Partition.

If you have not already gotten started, you might want to try VirtualBox instead of vmware.

Looking into virtual box, I just want an easy solution. Honestly I don't even care if I have an xp start menu, I just want to be able to open a seperate firefox for some sites that don't support *nix.

For the kids pc, I need to figure out how to install some games in wine and if I can use something like alcohol to mount the iso's. Haven't searched out this one yet.

Edit: there's sure alot of dependecies to install for virtual box.

If you're just looking for a way to run firefox for non 'nix sites a virtual machine may be overkill. I have windows version of firefox installed in wine and it will run several windows only sites. (Though I haven't gotten veoh working in it.)

If the goal is simply to run Win XP in a VM, all you need is the free VMWare Player, ver. 2.03. It is a download tarball, either 32-bit or 64-bit as applicable to your architecture. There are instructions in multiple locations, including their forum -- it is not particularly difficult, although the first time will take a while as you go down the "learning curve". Just save your downloaded tarball and make notes for next time. You will need need to locate and download a suitable VM for Win XP, and you'll need a legal Win XP installation CD. The basic idea is to install Win XP on the VM and then run it in a desktop size smaller than your Linux desktop. I run a 1600 x 1200 Linux desktop, and a 1280 x 1024 Win XP window. Note that your Win XP VM is just as vulnerable to viruses and malware as if it were a native installation. The only difference is, such stuff will not affect your Linux system. So, when you have your Win XP VM all installed and configured the way you want it, you make a backup of the .vmdk file, which is the virtual disk, as well as the .vmx file, which is the VM itself. Then when your Win XP VM falls victim to some virus or malware, you simple delete it and then reconfigure VMWare to open the backed up version. Last time that happened to me, the total recovery time was about 10 minutes. Compare that to re-installing a crashed Windows XP native installation!

EDIT: I believe the same result is possible to obtain from VirtualBox, which is installed by default with Hardy Heron. But I haven't done it.

Last time that happened to me, the total recovery time was about 10 minutes. Compare that to re-installing a crashed Windows XP native installation!

Amazing, a few weeks ago I resorted to installing xp on an empty hdd to get itunes for the daughter ipod after gtkpod kicked my arse. took at least 2 hours for a simple base install w/ no updates etc.

I haven't had time to work on this yet, but hope to get around to it soon.

Probably the kids games will run fine in wine, and that's certainly easier than installing and configuring the VM.

My original reason for installing VMWare Player was that I use a special-purpose MS Visual FoxPro application (database) that would not quite run correctly in wine. After spending a long weekend exchanging e-mails with the wine tech staff, I realized I was doomed to run Win XP, somehow. I benchmarked a sort/reindex routine in my database on a native Win XP installation on the same hardware that I run Linux on, then did the same routine in VMWare Player, and found that I had 95% of the performance of the native installation. That was the end of Win XP on my hard drive!

I've been watching Lost using firefox in wine on the ABC site. Their player installs very easy in wine.

I installed ff3b in wine but it doesn't run. I found the firefox.exe in the wine folder and created a shortcut to the desktop but clicking it doesn't do anything.

Any ideas?

Its for ubuntu but works for kubuntu. As I am not that well versed in linux this was way to easy. There is allot of steps, but if you do it as it states its easy.

Once you have VMware player installed you need to go to www.easyvmx.com and create the vm machine.

If you install v2 of VMWP use the v2 for easy vmx.
