[solved with nero]K3b: iso but no data

I haven't needed to use k3b with hardy up until now.

I wanted to backup some data and burn an iso (kde4 beta).

The iso burns fine but when trying to burn a data disk k3b tells me it doesen't like my medium.

    Same cd producer (EMTEC CD-R)

Any ideas please? This is important for me.

    Hi,

it might be annoying but I have to ask - did you try various times and the result was the same? Did you try burning a CD from a different maker? Is it possible that the amount of data was too big for a CD and what you really need is a DVD? What exactly is the message k3b gives you?
    I break it, therefore I learn it.<br />

Looks like you are not entirely alone:

      http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=676448

Is it a SATA optical drive? If so, it seems it needs to have the /dev/scx designation changed to something else. Also the BIOS "mode" for that drive may need to be "legacy" or "IDE-compatible" or something like that.

        Thank you dible / Fintan.

NO my cd writer is ide. I had a look at the link you posted me but that didn't help either.

at least nothing I could understand

why does it burn .iso's and not data / audio? It should be buring everything or nothing as far as I can see.

        I am lost.

          Hi again,

I find your problem quite interesting and I found a similar (actually the opposite) problem here. The person solved the problem by burning from the command line - did you try that?

I agree -- that is very weird. Have you tried other burning packages, such as brasero?

@Linuxgirl: Thanky ou the cli gives me:
              fred1@fintanws2:~$ fred1@fredws1:~$ cdrecord -v speed=<burning speed> dev=/dev/scd0 /home/fred1/SusaneKobler/ ; eject
bash: burning: No such file or directory
              fred1@fredws1:~$

I am not very good at the cl so I am probably missing something here

                Hi,

I did a bit of research and this tells me you're not the only one with this problem. I'm sorry I can't tell you how to fix it, but will try to find the correct CLI syntax for burning CDs from the command line and see if it helps.

                Hang in there
                I break it, therefore I learn it.<br />

Re: K3b: iso but no data

NOw I can't even burn a iso on HH updated to today. It worked yesterday

I did get .iso burning to work on my mepis install but get this from my mepis install:
                  System locale charset is ANSI_X3.4-1968
Your system's locale charset (i.e. the charset used to encode filenames) is set to ANSI_X3.4-1968. It is highly unlikely that this has been done intentionally. Most likely the locale is not set at all. An invalid setting will result in problems when creating data projects.
Solution: To properly set the locale charset make sure the LC_* environment variables are set. Normally the distribution setup tools take care of this.

What does that mean and how do I fix it?
I have posted with mepis as well.

As far as I know both systems use the same language and keyboard layout and charset (whatever that means I never changed it.

Re: K3b: iso but no data

Okay I sovled the charset thing by adding:
                    export LANG=de_CH.utf8
                    export LC_ALL=de_CH.utf8
                    to /etc/environment.

Now it will burn a .iso again but still no data.

It either it burns but cant fixate it and tells me cdrecord has no permissions for the cd drive or it doesn't like the medium (stupid, it did before ).

AFIK cdrecord isn't even installed but it uses Wodim.

                    Brassero still doen't work either.

I'll try kdesudo k3b but that is not a solution :P

Okay I tried a is (HH kde4) and it burned fine.

Burning data as user: cannot recognize media.

Burning data with kdesudo k3b: same result.

Do I have to change my data to iso and then burn (joke, no joke)

I give up for now. No usable reponses and a lot of agro, not counting my coaster collection which should come in handy at my next october fest

I just installed a trial version of nero 3 and no issues. worked like melted butter

This is not the solution I want but I need to burn discs and not throw them away ans senp hous trying to figure something out worked for years.
