My desktop no longer makes sounds after a recent upgrade when logging out, in, etc. Sound works fine in applications like amarok, but not in something like dragonplayer. kMplayer for kde3 has audio.
The issue seems to be with kde4 apps, but not kde3 apps. In systemsettings>notifications>kde system notifications, there are files, but when the preview button is used, no sound is heard. If I open the sound files with amarok or a similar kde3 app, they play.
What gives? My device [nvidia ck8] shows up in sound in systemsettings and it is showing it uses the xine backend.
Resolved:
SystemSettings: Sound>remove the device, hit apply, go to "backend" tab, I clicked "show OSS devices" and under deinterlace, I also clicked "file" (this one item is irrelevant to solve problem I suspect) and apply, then go back to the "device preference" tab and the device will be listed twice. On reboot and login to the desktop, there will be a warning that the device doesn't work and it is falling back to another (of the same name, (perhaps the alsa instead of the oss version or vice-versa?), and of course it alerted me with a KDE system sound as well, and the login chime sounded.
Other info - before this, I reinstalled anything that came up in adept under "sound" that was already installed and I also installed what looked to be relevant alsa packages that were not installed.
