    Java and KDE 4

    Hello,

I am still quite new to Linux but it seems that I have finally found a home with KDE 4 and Kubuntu! 8)

I have a question regarding Java and KDE, more precisely KDE 4: is the lack of "native"/system look and feel a result of KDE 4 not being final just yet? I get the native look in Gnome but not in KDE, that is why I am wondering.

Both Swing and SWT based applications look old. In the Swing case application get the default Java look (I think it's named metal) while SWT applicatons get some Windows lookalike look and feel.

Will it be fixed eventually or has it always been like this?

    Adam.

I think there is no java LookAndFeel for kde yet. So, you won't get native look and feel in kde in near future. I believe that there was a project that was working on this but I haven't followed it regularly.

SWT is built on top of GTK. So it should get the GTK look and feel. So if you have gnome installed it might get the look-n-feel of gnome.

So, a KDE distro is an alternative alternative to Windows?
Seems like GTK/Gnome is the standard environment amongst desktop users.

I researched a bit and it looks like Java apps can get QT look and feel through some library called QJambi. But I've been curious to try learning C++ so why not start now?

Worldwide they hold the balance. In the us gnome is more popular. In Europe kde is more popular.

One can give philosophy lectures on the "why"

so I guess it all depends on what one calls "standard" and if that is a goal on the desktop.

As far as kde4 is concerned? well it is basicly only 3 months old so I guess we have a bit of time and patience to grow with it

i don't think that is right. my best educated guess is that it is close to 50/50.

Hang around the redhat forums and you will get the same impression. Go to mepis, knopix or suse it is the opposite.

Of course we do have our good old kubuntu
