Hi all,
Let me start by saying that I'm a former Ubuntu user in which I was very comfortable getting my system set up in all details, so I'm still learning the ins and outs of the KDE desktop.
I must say that I like the desktop itself, and one of the reasons I decided to join in on testing Hardy of Kubuntu is because I feel that at times Kubuntu stays behind Ubuntu, while in reality it shouldn't.
Regarding this: in Ubuntu setting up Compiz is childsplay. However I found it to be really daunting in Kubuntu. For this reason I have some questions to all of you (including the devs, if they also read these forums) to help enlighten me on some silly things I ran into.
1) If Compiz is not officially supported, why is it included in the default install?
2) If it is included in the default install, why is it configured in such a fashion that it cannot work?
3) There are clearly errors in the Compiz configuration file and it's downright buggy at times. Is the current Compiz version frozen?
4) Did anyone manage to get Compiz running with an ATI graphics card? If so, how?
5) The Compiz panel that allows you to turn it on doesn't allow you to specify what is supposed to be on. Are we supposed to be using compizconfig-settings-manager for this in the KDE environment? And if we are, why isn't that one installed by default also?
6) Did anyone get it working at all? (just curious)
To top it off, this is my terminal output when I try to run Compiz with a 'supposedly' correct config file:
I can tell I have some additional effects on my desktop, but for sure those small effects are not worth the trouble I went through to get this working. So really, I'd love to get Compiz going properly.
Then I have another list for Kubuntu in general, but I'll leave that for another post. Not sure about the rest of you, but I have found a lot of basic packages that should be included in a live version not being installed by default. And that worries me a bit.
Anyway, for all you Compiz lovers out there, and if you got it working, please share how.
Marc
