Re: 8.04 kde4 install; get login screen, but bails back to login

As an update, I just tried the live cd RC version and it doesn't work either...

It is the Openchrome driver that ubuntu uses. If you want this to work, I think you have to compile it from source.

I have not had time to work with it so I just installed kubuntu-desktop after logging in using 'failsafe' at the greeting screen to get KDE3.

Here is the how to in order to compile it from source.

If it is that easy, I am not sure why it just isn't fixed by now.

Exactly, once I compiled VIA's own driver it logged in on KDE4 fine.

Why don't they just replace openchrome with VIA's driver or (and probably a better way) just add it as an option so you can choose between both?

          FIXED!!!!!!!

Just downloaded Full fresh release of 8.04 remix, and it ROCKS!!! KDE 4 now loads juuuust fine. Adept loaded firefox with all plugins just like I'd expect.. Ive had it up and running for a couple hours now, and not a single hiccup!!

Unless a reboot breaks it again, this issue is history....

You are using the chrome9 video? I wonder if an apt-get update/upgrade will fix mine.

If you know how and/or have time, can you check to see what "driver" is being used?

Re: 8.04 kde4 install; get login screen, but bails back to login

No, i'm sure its using the generic 'Intel' driver.. The xorg.conf is different, it just says "Configured video device" in it... Weird.....

But anyway, my box is an old Dell Optiplex my company used to use for a server, and they just gave it to me... Its only an 850MHZ with 500 meg of ram with the onboard video... Its so old it doesnt even have an AGP slot in it for a decent video card!!

I hope you have luck with the new release... I used the new full release of the 8.04 REMIX... I was worried that I was going to waste time downloading and installing it if it only has KDE4, and it wouldnt work...

But I was pleasantly surprised that it works just fine... Ive played with it quite a bit, and it seems Extreemly stable... I just cant figure out how to edit a file in root mode.. the Dolphin that comes with it doesnt have the "Edit as Root" button anymore... I'll figure it out soon enough though....

Let me know how it goes for you k?

Unless Dolphin has been fixed in the final release of HH, I wouldn't use it to "edit as root" anything. If it doesn't have the option in the menu, good. Don't get tempted to launch Dolphin from the command line as root.

You can use Konqueror. Browse to the folder that contains the file you want to edit. If the file is owned by root, just right-click on the file and choose Actions > Edit as Root

Thanks snowhog, but Konqueror doesnt give me any "Actions" options, from the file menu, or right clicking the file.

I can now edit a file by putting a Kate Icon on my desktop, and configure it to run as a different user... That works for me...

The only other thing I see now, is I cant move files by default using Dolphin... There used to be an option for "Open as root" in dolphin, which allowed me to move files anywhere I wanted....

Have any ideas on how to do that?

                  Thanks,
                  Mike

                      Thanks again Snowhog....

I know KDE4 hasnt fully matured yet, but c'mon, shouldnt any OS come with the ability to edit and move files if the user has the rights, without having to download and install a third party utility? Isn't that the CORE intent of a computing OS?

I will use the Utility though, and I am still impressed with KDE4 - This post isn't intended to be a flame....

So you are using 8.04 with KDE4? I'm running 8.04 with KDE3.5.9 and Konqueror does have the Action > Edit as Root, so if you don't, then it's an issue with KDE4 and not HH. The systemmenu that kubicle wrote is one of the better KDE 'hacks' IMHO, and many who have found it agree. It actually adds the functionality you are referring to.

Yes, im using the fresh new release of 8.04 (RE-MIX), and it comes with KDE4 ONLY... You said Kubicles utility was written for 3.59... will it work with Konqueror 4?

I'll have to try it later anyway, I gotta roll here.... Thanks again for your replies... and did you catch my question about your numbers? I'd like to know what number I am.... :-)

I'm a month late, but the menu should work with konqueror/dolphin in KDE4 (the latest version includes KDE4 versions of the .desktop files and install instructions). Please report back if you run into any issues.

You can do it without the menu by launching konqueror as root with kdesudo
                                Code:
                                kdesu 'konqueror --profile filemanagement'
(Many people create a launcher [desktop/panel icon] for the command for easy access)

The menu is just a 'time saver plugin', the functionality is in the OS already.
