    Kde4.0.2 Desktop

Every Icon/Link I put on the desktop like a Home Folder, Samba or my Storage Drive. I can change the link icons but not with Samba/network folder I do not have persmission. Also all link do not open at all. So easy to do in KDE 3.5.6 but not in 4.0.2.

To many bugs still to use it.

See at the end of April, back to reinstalling 7.10.

You can run Hardy Heron with KDE 3.5 -- that's the default HH desktop. I think that icon problem is KDE 4, right?

The desktop in KDE4 is different than desktops in the past. http://plasma.kde.org/cms/1029

In Plasma, the desktop is not a file manager view. Icons will still be able to be placed there, just as you can put application launchers and links to files and locations you are working with, but that will not be the grand purpose of Plasma's desktop. Instead, the desktop layer will be a place to interact with your system and a place for the system to interact with you. This means providing an exensible user interface. It shouldn't be busy, but it should be useful.

Thanks Mike -- much more elegant and complete than my answer!

I'm trying to get used to being unable to deal with the files on the KDE4 desktop. All you have to do is open Dolphin and copy/move/delete or whatever, but it's a hard habit to form after 15 or 20 years of right-clicking on desktop objects and having your way with them. :P

Having to open a different folder to open a folder is not useful and fast for me. Having icons on the desktop that make life easier and faster is what a desktop should be about. or whats the point of the desktop.

Just to have a background image and nothing else. why bother with a desktop then?

just hoping then that kde 3.? will always be with kubuntu in all releases so I can organize my desktop to be useful.

I haven't used desktop icons in years, I keep the most used items in a quick launch bar or soon AWN, I like to keep a few superkaramba/widgets/screenlets etc on the desktop and some eyecandy. I prefer a clean desktop.

                Don't hold your breath.

On the other hand I remember kde2.0, and when 3.0 came out and all the buggyness with those that made linux just unusable for me at the time.

The speed of developement that kde4 is laying down is simply amazing.
So patience is a virtue and kde3.5 is still very usable but kde4 will eventually take over and be much more usable.

For a definite opinion I will wait and grow with this until 4.1 / 4.2

                  Re: Kde4.0.2 Desktop

I have found this useful. If you "right click" on an entry in the main menu, you will find the option to add it to the "Favorites" list. I put all of my frequently used programs there for easy access without having to search thru "Applications" tabs for them. And it keeps the desktop clean.
