    Help Me Dibl,Fintan or anyone!

Dear dibl I know that you will have the answer to my nvidia and display problems and so now that you have joined us 'on the edge' can you help a little old gran?

As there isn't yet a way to set up my 1400 x 900 LCD display in HH, I might get out of this rather large display with help. I have installed nvidia-glx-new but forgotten how to enable it in terminal (keep writing stuff down to input then losing it!) Also how (step by step please) do I get the missing controls in HH to set up your display working?
I remember this was one of the last things to be corrected in GG, but there is surely a way to do this?

I think that my display at the mo must only be about 800x 600!

So can you or fintan help me get HH to display correctly?

Just tell me what to type in please.

    thanks in anticapation

    TG

Well, Gran I am sorry to disappoint but I know nothing about nvidia cards as I am still using an old ati card. That will probably change in the near future, so I amy need dibles martini help there as well

Mmmm, couldn't remember which graphics card you had Fintan (tell you my memory is shot, and it ain't with drink!) but I know that dibl has a nvidia card as I have had to rely on him before regarding which nvidia to install. I can't get KDE4 in this new Alpha either but it could be me. Do we still have to rely on Add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main As when I included this adept broke! (no wonder we prefer synaptic) but it isn't being ackowledged by apt-get either??

So maybe you can help me with that Fintan, is it still the same procedure in Alpha 4 as before?

again I don't know because I have been updating since alpha1.

I did read on a few posts that apparently that does not work.

Did you go though the whole proceedure?
In HH you just have to search for kde4-core in synaptic and install.

Okay, just reread your post. Adding:
won't do it because that is the repo for GG NOT HH.

Kde4 should be in the HH repo by default. So I would either delete or comment out that line from your sources.list, reload and install with kde4-core.

        I hope that helps

Oh Fintan, you are brilliant! That worked (but I am sure that I followed those instructions in Alpha 2 and 3 and they worked??) So which repo do we get any new updates to KDE4 from if we can't now use the PPa one?

Is there another one or will they be updated via the HH repo's ?

Honestly thank goodness for you guys!

Thank you and your welcome of course

AFIK HH has kde4 in its repos by default. For GG I think having the ppa and the backports enabled(at least I do) should work for updates.

I also found that the GG version is more up to date than the HH version. At least as for smaoll stuff like getting a few things like kate-kde4 and dolphin-kde4 working from kicker and showing the right icons.

But that is a different post

Re: Help Me Dibl,Fintan or anyone!

Sorry to be so slow finding this -- I got involved in a movie last night ....

I see you found a fix to the screen resolution issue. I would have tried running nvidia-settings as Super User, Alt-F2 "kdesu nvidia-settings", and then set the resolution that way.

HH has KDE4 in the standard repos. That's the good news. The bad news is, try and install kde4-core and you'll see "BREAK".

Try it with apt-get and you can see a bit of "dependency hell".

I assume it will be straightened out as HH moves toward Beta.

Re: Help Me Dibl,Fintan or anyone!

If you already have installed the nvidia-glx-new without any errors, what you should do now is:
                  Open a Konsole and type:
                  sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
There, look for Device and replace nv with nvidia save it and exit
                  Reboot the system
Once is completely up and running, again, open a Konsole and type:
                  sudo nvidia-settings
Make the necessary adjustments and hit Apply and Save to X configuration file
Now you should be good to go

                  Best Regards,

Yep, sure do. It all seems to be right, according to the guidance. It may be a 64-bit issue, although that's a stretch. Here's the bloody details:

                    Code:
                    dibl@cville:~$ sudo apt-get install kde4-core
                    [sudo] password for dibl:

                    Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
                    that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde4-core: Depends: kdebase-kde4 (>= 4:4.0.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdebase-runtime (>= 4:4.0.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdebase-workspace (>= 4:4.0.0) but it is not going to be installed

You are on HH with this right. If you are wait for....well no it is 4 o'clock somewhere in the world. So get yourself a beer and delete or comment that out of your sources.list it is gutsy!

yes dibl you have done exactly the same mistake that I made, it is nothing to do with your 64 install. Thanks to you all for your help as always! You would think that I would stay clear of all this Alpha stuff wouldn't you, but once everything is working okay........ I get bored! (Like living on the edge like you guys, only difference being, I don't know what I am doing, and you guys do!)

Ahhhhhhhhh -- so just nuke the bad repo? Can it possibly be that easy? I'll try it.

Mehh -- nope, that didn't work. But it was a very hopeful moment!

I gotta go out for awhile -- I'll take another crack at it later.

EDIT: No joy. I tried 2 different experiments:

                            1. Delete the "gutsy" repo line, reload, and try again. BREAK

                            2. Change "gutsy" to "hardy" and add that repo, reload and try again. BREAK

"apt-get install kde4-core" shows the same dependency problems as before.

                            I think I'm waiting ....

No joy for me either trying to get my display right. I tried the sudo kate/ etc/X11/xorg.config but no joy with that, there was no nv to change to nvidia so then tried Alt-F2 as per dibl's advice, but no where did it let me as it did say my xconf had been changed and to relog in which then produced a screen not compliant with my Samsung Syncmaster (I could just about make out the screen with tearing all over it) and a small white pop up from my lcd stating 'not optimum settings 1400 x 900 60 htz, then it all goes blank so can't see what I am doing! Blast and damn!
Why is the usual display settings missing! It was missing when we were all testing Gutsy if you all remember and didn't get placed back until last.

Well I don't know what to do now. I am dual booting on this test machine with Linux Mint (now that it has KDE) and quite liking it so will just have to use that for now, bummer!

                              Thanks anyway guys
