    LTS?

I have read several blogs and threads pertaining to the Kubuntu 8.04 release. A lot of them are fuzzy or contradicting about it being a long term release. The Kubuntu website has KDE 3.5.8 images, and a KDE 4.0 preview. The 3.5.8 image seems to be the regular release. It was stated that both would be released. Will the 3.5.8 release be LTS or not? From what I've gathered, they are going to release both, but the 3.5.8 release won't be LTS. Are they just releasing it for the heck of it while they develop the KDE 4.0 version? This just doesn't make any sense.

    Re: LTS?

    Hi,

In fact from what I've read none will be LTS because :
    - for 3.5.8 it's not sure how long kde will support 3.5.x versions
    - for 4.0, it's not free of bugs yet so they don't want to get it LTS

If I've made mistakes please correct me.

      Re: LTS?

It looks like two different questions are confused together here.

      1. Is *buntu 8.04 a Long Term Support (LTS) release? YES:

      https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...st/000336.html

      2. Does KDE 4 have anything to do with LTS? No.

KDE4 is the next version of the K Desktop Environment. KDE is used by Kubuntu for the desktop, but KDE is a separate open source project and has its own release schedule:

      http://techbase.kde.org/Schedules/KD...lease_Schedule

It says that Kubuntu 8.04 will provide as much support as possible for KDE 4, but it will follow its own *buntu release schedule.

Hope this makes it a little more clear.

        Re: LTS?

Um.. no... Kubuntu 8.04 will not be an LTS release. See the discussion starting with Riddell's announcement in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ku...er/002066.html

Kubuntu 8.04 will have 2 variants. One with KDE 3.5.9 as the default, and one with KDE 4.0.1 (or 4.0.2) as the default.

That's all there is to it.
