hardy alpha 3 usb drive error

Plugging in a thumb drive creates problems for me.

The system recognizes the drive, and the pop up appears asking what to do, but when I select "open in new window" an error message pops up.

    The error says:

    Error - KIOExec
/media/disk is a folder, but a file was expected.

I click OK and the drive is there, and can be accessed, so that isn't a problem.

The drive also can be safely removed properly.

    The window just doesn't appear.

This same error also appears with the media card reader when a card is inserted. The card is recognized, and the dialog appears, but the error shows up "/media/disk-1 is a folder, but a file was expected."

After the first error, everything is fine.

I have the same error. It does not seem very common, though. I do not think it has anything to do with USB at all. I guess there is some improperly set link in the system and I suspect it happened during the instalation when I used separate home partition and did not format it first.

Did you file a bug for this so I can follow progress?

I haven't filed a bug report. I will look to find out how to do that.

I installed Alpha 3 on a spare 10GB drive. It was already partitioned 1GB swap, 4.2GB /, and 4.5GB /home. I did a clean install with reformatting, but did not repartition.

At some point I may reinstall with partitioning to see if that makes a difference.

I've had this same problem with all the alpha's. It happens with every type of USB drive I've tried. I thought it was probably a known issue, so I haven't bugged it as of yet.

          Is it a NTFS-formatted drive?

All of the USB thumb drives I checked were FAT32.

The error also happens with SD cards in the installed media reader.

It looks like this has been filed as a bug.

Strange. I installed Alpha 4 yesterday and it's the first Linux I've ever installed that instantly and automatically recognized my NTFS-formatted USB thumb drive, mounted it and put it on the desktop for me. I could scarcely believe my eyes when I popped it open with Dolphin and saw my data there.

Maybe you should just give Alpha 4 a spin!

But don't expect to put KDE4 on it right away!

If you uninstall Dolphin this problem s solved.
Not ideal, but at least the system tray buttons now work.
