    Screensavers vanished

I went to change my screensaver the other day, but when I pulled up system settings, clicked 'desktop', and then 'screen savers', the list was inexplicably empty. It still runs the last screen saver I selected when I leave it idle, so I know they're still there, but they aren't showing up. Removing and reinstalling the kscreensaver package didn't help. Accessing the applet though Konqueror 'settings:' or kcontrol doesn't show them either. Anyone know what might have gotten messed up, and how to fix it?

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue with my current installation of Kubuntu 8.04. Did anyone ever solve this?

      No.

For awhile (6.10 - 7.10, IIRC) there were some semi-functional Open GL screensavers available, but now we're back to a black screen.

I'm running Hardy (8.04) on two machines, recently (two days ago) downgraded from Intrepid, and I (like dibl) have no problem with screen savers. This implies that you have a problem, so we need some information.
        (1) Are you using KDE3 or KDE4? If KDE4 someone else will have to handle your problem.
        (2) If you are using KDE3, do you have the kscreensaver package installed. Have you installed any other screensaver packages, e.g. xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, or whatever?
        (3) Did your screensaver list suddenly disappear?

The kscreensaver package works in kde4 as well.

@dibl: That's interesting because there is a separate package for KDE4 in Hardy called kscreensaver-kde4. The description states:
This package contains the screen savers for KDE 4.

The hooks for the standard xscreensavers are no longer part of this package.

This package is part of KDE 4, and a component of the KDE 4 artwork module. See the 'kde4' and 'kdeartwork-kde4' packages for more information.
I interpreted that to mean that the KDE3 screensavers, especially the xscreensavers, don't work with KDE4 in Hardy.

BTW, my reference to someone else, like you, helping the O.P. with KDE4 has to do with my own spectacular lack of success with Intrepid

              Re: Screensavers vanished

Here's the deal. In Hardy, they came up with the "x-kde4" thing to try to segregate kde4 packages from kde3.5 packages. On my Hardy system, I ended up with a mess and just threw in the towel and installed 8.10 Alpha 5.

However, in 8.10, the hidden directory known as .kde4 in 8.04 is now back to .kde. That resolved all the problems that I was having with 8.04, with package and settings conflicts.

So, in 8.04, they had dual parallel naming systems for kde3.5 and kde4 packages and locations in the filesystem. In 8.10, they were able to revert to a single naming system, and a lot of the conflict issues went away. That's why the screensavers package can once again be simply "kscreensaver" in 8.10, and work as well as it ever did.

Ah, but the guy who reopened this thread today is running Hardy.

If there is no KDE4 installation, then I think the "kscreensaver" package should be fine.
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install kscreensaver
If there has ever been an installation of KDE4 on that Hardy system, then .... do you know to make a vodka martini?
