    64bit in 2011

    Hello.
Im thinking about installing Kubuntu on a AMD 64bit cpu machine, so i searched the forum for some fact but only found older posts.
I have some questions about the topic:

    1. why not use 64 bit os ?
    2.aint there a ram allocation problem around 3gb whit 32bit ?
    3.Is there a 32bit compatible mode in 64bit ?

    Thanx

    Indeed, why not?

Yep, any more than 3GB is not recognized.

    3.Is there a 32bit compatible mode in 64bit ?
    Yep.

      Re: 64bit in 2011

IMO early last year (2009) there were still some library issues, but I've been strictly 64-bit for more than 2 years and I've fond no un-fixable issues.

I use the 32-bit compatible libraries to run a very old linux game and that's it.

i've been on 64 bit for also at least 2 years, and i don't even know if i have any thing 32 bit installed , but if i do , there was nothing for me to install or configure for it to work. 64 bit linux "just works".

VMware Player 3, running a Windows VM, on top of your 64-bit Linux system makes a dandy skyper, or other proprietary Windows things that you need (cell phone apps, etc.).

VBox should work fine as well, to run your Windows VM. It has some little complexity regarding USB functionality (I don't remember exactly how that goes, but it bit me when I tried it). I'm a happy VMware Player user.

                    A bit off-topic:
Cd did not work, trying dvd (Kubuntu 10.10)
                    Hardware:
                    Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3
                    Amd Athlon X2 5200 2,7ghz
                    2x corsair 2gb 6400
                    2Tb Samsung ecogreen sata disc
                    geforce 210 512mb pcie

got a stdin: I/O error and then it "hang"whit cd

Changed to a DVD player disabled floppy and are installing....
                    2011 seams to be a Happy/Interesting year!

                      Re: 64bit in 2011

In general, the 64 bit version is the best to use on a 64 bit system. The downside is that some of the proprietary software that is still only 32 bit will not work properly with the 64 version. So you need to check this out.

My son uses a 64 bit version and uses virtual machine software to run both a 32 bit version for some software that has this issue, and to run a version of Windows XP to run some Win XP only software - he has no issues with any of this.

do you have examples of what software this is , since i do have a few proprietary things installed (flash, some windows games for wine.. , codecs). im just wondering what these programs might be with issues.
