    No network after update

Sorry if this is a dupe. I read what look like similar issues, but none are exactly the same so I don't want to create confusion by posting in other threads. Something has gone wacky since an update a few weeks ago and I have spent a lot of time, but can't find it. When I started, I was running Hardy and wicd. It has a built-in Realtec 8139 and a PCI Linksys 300N wireless adapter (using the STA restricted driver). All was running fine before the update. After, there was no wicd tray icon. When I tried to run it manually it told me that wicd-manager (or similar) was not running. I ran that manually then the tray icon and I could get a connection, but I could not get it to start at boot like it had previously. Having run networkmanager on some other machines with good luck, I decided that I would get back to basics so I uninstalled wicd/installed networkmanager/knetworkmanager. I got things going like normal. After a few weeks, I started have similar problems where knetwork manager would show disconnected and tell me networkmanager was not running and no network devices found. I went in manually and specified a static ip, etc for my wireless and got it working. I went ahead and reinstalled wicd. Still no joy. It will not start at boot. I can't find any errors in dmesg, everything seems to be working. Bringing it up with ifconfig works, but does not get an IP address when I use DHCP. Using iwconfig, none of the changes I make show up. I am stumped. My /etc/network/interfaces has just the two lines for lo. Help.
